After smoking cigars for a year now, I have had good ones and bad, but the last two days I have encountered a problem in two different cigars. I punched both of them and started smoking. After fifteen minutes or so, I notice a taste that is really funky (like wahat I imagine it would taste like if you poured water into an ashtray full of cigarettes and drank it) and upon inspection, there is a dark brown liquid inside the punch hole almost like tobacco ooze. I touched my finger to it and there was a large amount of yellow-brown oil that got on them and smelled like bad tobacco. What is this? Is this normal? Is it something that I am doing? I wrote to CI about it (since the first one was something that they had sent) but don't expect a reply until the start of next week and was wondering if anyone here has experienced the same or knows what it is.

Sounds like tar?

Nasty bitter tasting and kind of drips from the end. Have only seen that on machine made cigars myself.

Need a cigar condom.

Seriously, perhaps the cigar was too moist/high humidity. Green, even. I've only had something similar to that with brand new cigars that haven't rested.

Seriously lukin, what you might want to try is getting away from that punch & going with a guillotine cutter. You probably caused a kind of tar bottleneck by using the punch.

what snow said... green or newer cigars with a higher humidity... also add in drawing on it more often then usuall and a hotter box lit.. this will give you a build up of this "Tar" and seem to ooze out of the cooler end.. IE the cut/punched end... my Nephue who smokes cigars like he's roaching a joint always has this happen when he comes to visit me... first time was with a 5 Vegas and the last couple times was with a few padron's... I made a post of this a few years back because it was something I had never seen before... but talking with others over the years this is what I had learned or put together from the talks over all.. slow down on the good stuff and make sure your Gars have the right humdity controled...

I have seen that happen a few times and each time it was someone that punched their cigar. The tar builds up on the edge of the hole since it is not cut and eventually oozes out, stains your face, and has a terrible taste. Way to prevent it, get rid of the punch and use a cutter. Hope it works out for you!

i'm not saying it wasn't the punch, but that's pretty much what i use on coronas; figurados get cut with the xikar blades. i've never had a problem like this, and in fact i prefer punched cigars to cut.

that said, hot-boxing or smoking a cigar too fast isn't a problem for me. i've been at a happy medium (not too slow; not too fast) for a good while now -- though i've still been smoking cigars for less than a year, for what that's worth.

interesting, though, and i hope i never do encounter "cigar clap!" 😛

I have seen this posted a couple of times. It is definitely tar and each time the gars were punched not cut. Not sure if they were green or not.

I also don't use a punch (although I did some years ago). I like the end of the cigar wide open.

It must be the punch then, which is just something I am going to have to learn to deal with. I like smoking a punched cigar rather than a cut one, so I think I am going to keep punching, and just keep an eye out for the tar, after all , I have been punching for months now and this is the first I'm seeing of this. I was wondering also if maybe the heat has anything to do with it. Its been weel over 100 degrees here lately and it may be heating up the tar as well and concentrating it before I even get to it. thanks again

also happens on torpedos with a small cut towards the tip, a strong, oily cigar and heavy puffing. This should never happen if you puff the cigar properly. I've had it happen twice - both on torpedos - one CT Tribute and one San Cristobal La Punta. Both cigars were so good I found myself puffing like mad on them and out came a little tar - oops....
