About 1000' south of me is this undeveloped meadow (disked recently, so it's all dirt in this pic). One of the local Roosevelt elk herds frequents this spot. This is about 25-30 animals, and they have to cross US hwy. 101 to get here.

I live in Kentucky.
We have elk in the eastern part of the state.
My father was drawn for a hunt (Cow)6 or 7 years ago.
He harvested one that weighed 620 lbs. It was a record at the time. I am not sure if it still stands as they only post info on the bulls.
He took it down around five pm and it took untill eleven pm to get it back to camp. We had the state bioligist with us and he would not let us gut it untill we got it back to camp because he wanted to get a proper weight on her.....
Hell of a trip.

Millie and I lived in Orick the winter/spring of 72. We used to go out and watch the herds of elk. All the cows would be in one herd with a couple of bulls. The rest of the male would be off in a herd by them selves. One of the bulls with the cows was named Goat. LOL Beautiful country.

Ever now and then we would hear a gun shot go off. The word was the cows were really good eating.

620 lbs is a big cow.

800+lb bull (mature) is about normal here, and pastures and meadows and foliage are abundant year-round.
