I realize that....I'm just curious why we are still over there. Everybody told me it was to stop terrorism. Then they said it was to catch Saddam. Then they said it was to give the Iraqi's an election. Then they said it was to stop insurgents. I ask again....why are we still there?

I wish we did not have to be there as well! The sooner we leave Iraq the better as far as I am concerned! I am sick of having our soldiers being blown up by car bombs, etc....I still maintain that we had to go in there and get rid of this tyrant!

We are still there, and will continue our precense there until some semblence of stability is brought to the region. All of the reasons you mentioned above (terrorism, Sadaam, insurgents) are all steps towards the goal of achieving that stability. There was a war fought against a tyrant in American about 230 years ago, and I seem to recall it taking a few years after the wars end before an efficient (well somewhat) and nationally recognized government had taken control of the country...

There will never be a stability in that region that would compare to say, the US or an EU nation (simply due to the nature of the region), however, I do believe, that at some point the government will be able to take foot and get ahold of things (how is that for a runon, my grammar is shot today it seems). Once the infrarstructure is rebuilt, and the economy gets up and running again, things will smooth out.

Cigarbidwidow.. from the DOD websites and what I'm reading we're pulling back troops and starting to bring more home because hostilities are on a decline since after these elections... what the media portrays isn't the real picture... So Yes with Iraqi's new rule and governing powers.. things are changing for the good... but this doesn't mean they're not going to have growning pains such as we did with the Civil War and whatnots... Iraq is becoming more stable.. but hopefully the surrounding nations will view this and take note for their own changes and good of their people??

2 yrs ago I didn't see this region as becoming stable anytime in my lifetime... Now I am beggining to see hope!!!

I've already explained why our Army and Marines are in Iraq. You weren't paying attention. It doesn't have anything to do with WMD or Saddam, or any of the 100 other reasons...

...our Army and Marine units are there to be trained in how to conduct a 21st century urban war and to test new technology that could only be tested under combat conditions. Any other explanation rings hollow. Even the medical personnel are learning new techniques for saving lives. Our Army and Marine units will leave Iraq when the training is done and not a minute before then.
