I think the best part of me learning the pledge as a little snot monkey was later learning what it meant, usually one word at a time.
It's true, our nation is no longer under God, so it probably should be taken out of the pledge for factual reasons. But that's ok, it's only a country. The same thing that ruined this one has ruined all the others too. People are soft and liberals exist.
There are no lines drawn anymore, they come with all sorts of differentiations so nobody has to say what they really mean.
The whole "I support the troops but not the war" is a line of sh*t and a way to hide behind a PCism. If you support the troops, you support the soldier (ok, toad, squid, zoomy or jarhead), which means you support their decision to join the military. Their decision to join the military included their conscious decision to agree that they would do what the President at the time says, which, being the military, will most likely include killing people and blowing stuff up.
So, if you support the troops then you support the war, it was their decision to sign up and agree to kill people and blow things up if told to do so. There was nothing that said they reserve the right to decide whether they actually want to do that or not.
I support the police but I don't support them arresting criminals or issuing tickets.
I support lawyers, but they shouldn't be allowed in court rooms.
I support smoking bans, but they shouldn't be used against smokers, that's discrimination, where's the ACLU (American Communist Lawyer's Union).
What was America's very heart and core was best stated by Archibald Macleish who said "There are those who will reply that the liberation of humanity, the freedom of man and mind, is nothing but a dream...They are right, it is the American Dream." That is no longer true, and it's very sad. It's also very sad to realize when something you loved is no longer worth it.
I think Thomas Jefferson said it the best
"Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are a gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever."
Yikes...how'd that soap box get under my feet?
