And it's ugly, no matter who the perpetrator is...

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees star Derek Jeter is the latest athlete to receive a threatening letter warning him to stop dating white women.

The letter was mailed to Jeter at Yankee Stadium and called him a "traitor to his race," according to a story in Monday's editions of the Daily News. It warned him to "stop or he'll be shot or set on fire," said a law enforcement source who the newspaper did not identify. It was not clear whether the source was speaking on condition of anonymity.

Jeter, whose father is black and mother is white, has been linked with women of various racial and ethnic backgrounds in New York's gossip columns.

In the last three years, 60 similar letters have been sent to professional black athletes and other well-known black men across the nation, including civic and business leaders.

Those receiving the letters include Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas, Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor and the parents of tennis player James Blake, according to the Daily News.

"The wording is very similar to letters that have been sent to other prominent people across the country," special agent Scott Wilson of the FBI in Cleveland told the newspaper.

Both the FBI, which has said it believes one writer sent those letters, and the New York Police Department's hate crimes unit are investigating the letter, the newspaper said.

The mail, postmarked from cities in northeastern Ohio and Pennsylvania, criticized interracial relationships and directed the men to end such relationships "or they're going to be castrated, shot or set on fire."

St. Ignatius and St. Edward, two Roman Catholic high schools in Cleveland with well-known sports programs, received threatening letters addressed to student athletes last fall.

Hope they catch the guy/girl. I'm interested in the race of the person threatening Jeter.

Is he just suppose to date women that are 50/50? That in itself would be racist.

MACS, I know racism exists. It just makes me crazy when people claim racism in a situation where it doesn't exist. Its a crutch and a convenient excuse not to succeed.

Interesting article.

Andy,

Charlie beat me to the punch.

I have known black women to be pretty pissed off when one of "their men" is dating a white woman.

I know you aren't a racists, but it is funny how you jumped to the Redneck white guys as your first thought.

Oh, I know it exists too. I was being facetious. The point I was making is that it is ugly, no matter WHO the perpetrator. This article just made me think of a show I once watched where black women were livid because black men were dating white women. They were saying that the black men needed to stick with the black women.

I guess the point of the thread was to say, yes racism does exist, but it isn't just white people who are guilty of it.

is racism rampent on this forum?

I hear/see many play the trump card on Race here in many threads... hell many times I myself had been called out as a racist (to which I LMFAO at the fools)

But I do see this topic coming up quite a bit and thats why I ask the question???

are the one's singing so loud about racism the actual culprets?? is it because they've never gotten out an experienced life and culture? what makes a person racist?

MACS, I have a SoCal racism question for you.

Is the majority of the white racism more against one specific ethnic group? Or does "Racist Whitey" just hate all non-whites?

I have no idea...

I think that people are too quick to jump to conclusions nowadays. If a black guy and a white guy throw punches at each other, does it mean they are racist against each other, or just pissed off at each other at the moment? Let the media get ahold of that and they'd be members of rival gangs, hell bent on killing each other, when in actuality they are probably friends from way back who got into a disagreement and came to blows... who'll be drinking beers together on their porch tomorrow. But that don't sell commercial time.

I have a friend, transplanted from a Boston suburb, lily white. His racism does not discriminate. He has issues with any one who isnt white. He likes living in the Central Valley of California that is littered with people of his ilk and because there arent many of "them" (replace any ethnic people for "them"). He makes some pretty embarrassing remarks. Yet he claims he isnt racist??? The last time he made some of these remarks, which spanned three or four different ethnicities, he was speaking to Ms. Dragon, who by the way, happens to be a Filipina. But I guess if he is friends with you its all good, he wasnt talking about "you".

I guess I did jump the gun regarding who I figured was behind this crap. I guess it is because I live among "those kind" of racists. Mercer Co. is not too far from here and is unfortunate enough to be the county in which the local Ku Klux Clowns have their HQ.

There use to be a small Klan offshoot up about 30 miles North of where I grew up. Once a month, they would hold a meeting in the woods and a one inch by one inch blurb would be in the paper about it.

I have no idea how many people were really involved in the Klan and how many were just hard drinking, rednecks that liked to scream NIG... but someone complained about it being in the paper.

Since then, its no longer in the paper, nobody knows where they are or how many there are. I think that complaint backfired.

You can't talk to most of those people. I've been accused of being a Nig Lover because I don't 'hate em all'.

Its funny how I'm a "Nig Lover" Up North and an Anti-Minority Racist on CBid.

Can't please ev-ery-one, so you, got to please yourself.... do do doo doo do.

Is it racism if I hate all of the Yankees? Actually, I pretty much hate the American League.

You can't change people's minds by beating them over the head.

I think a lot of the name calling that goes on around here is simply to shut people up. If you don't agree with me I will call you a name that has been deemed socially unacceptable and you will turn yourself inside out to prove that I'm wrong. The old Hegelian Dialectic that Ruggy keeps mentioning.

You bet there is racism. Eveyone practices it. My dad used to come home from his job as a prison guard and tell us about how the blacks hated the asians, and the indians hated the blacks, and the asians hated the whites, and the whites hated the cubans and blah, blah, blah.

Everyone has at least one little racial bias tucked away inside their head. I do. Black women scare the snot out of me. I'd run headlong into a crowd of men of any race before I'd tangle with one black woman when she's mad. My mother, who grew up in the 40's, mistrusts asians. My dad, who grew up in S. Minnesota where there is a lot of migrant labor, doesn't like mexicans. I'll bet, if we were all honest, we would all come up with a racial bias or two that we harbor. Does that make us bad people? Of course not! You become a bad person when you begin denying others the opportunity to be happy and successful over it.

Heather, you do make a good point about everyone having at least a little racial bias.

This is an interesting site, speaking of racism and our own little bias tucked away in our head. They're called imlicit association tests. I've tried a few of the tests and was pretty suprised at the results. you may be too.

I just took two implicit tests;

What an eye-opener!!!

I had no idea that I preferred Gay Black people over other classifications.

One of my neighbors is an upper middle class black family. They have two nice cars, a pretty house, and their yard is kept in nice condition.

Three houses further down is a white family. I have no idea of their social status, but it is obvious that their idea of a nice yard is different from mine. I only rarely see them, so I can not say if I like them or dislike them.

If I had to move next door to one of them, I'd quickly choose the former. Does that mean I hate whites?

But reverse that sequence, and I'm a racist biggot, who sees only color.
