are you kidding me. they are arguing over whether we should torture. cheney want's to settle the argument by only allowing certain people to torture.

are we in the middle ages? the vice president at the presidents behalf is willing to settle for just a select group of sadists to pull out finger nails or run electricity through someone's balls. women prisoners

can be raped. the president did not want any restrictions. the president is a mad man.

please don't try to justify this because they did it first. are we to become savages.

I know I'll probably take heat for this comment BUT, if we have to fight fire WITH fire, I say It's WAR man. If we have to torture some baddies to get it so be it. If it keeps us safe and the Iraqis who want to better their life, so be it. One must have the stomach and the stones to to what it takes to get the job done, and if that means we hot wire some terror suspect to a battery, DO IT and get the job done. OK, INCOMING!

I could care less what happens to people that wish to kill us.

I don't care if their rights to a speedy trial are violated, I don't care if we infringe on their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happyness are violated, I don't care if their freedom of speech and rights to assembly are violated.

After all these our our rights as Americans, not theirs as foriegn enemy combatants that at least have killed as many of those 2000 American service men and women whose graves rick likes to walk on in his bashing of Bush. And at most if giving the chance would kill every man woman and child in the United States.

My take on this is that if we feel it is perfectly acceptable to torture an enemy for any reason then we have legitimized our enemies torturing our solders.

Torture is a very ineffective means of gaining intelligence. Only politicians, dictators and terrorists believe that torture is an acceptable practice for gaining information. Torture is really only effective in creating fear.

Well,

I have given this topic a good amount of thought and have come to this conclusion. That I am against physical turture only. The types of turture that occured in the abu prison does even fall into the term of torture to me.

Having said that I am agaisnt giving the government free rein to torture. To give our or any government the ability by law to torture is playing with fire. We have all seen to some degree or another the law twisted to fit some government agency's agenda. It would be only a matter of time before our very own government would twist this law. I am for limiting the power of the government and of being a little paranoid of government, repubilcan or democrat.

JonR, why do you think that this is a liberal/conservative issue? What is your rationale for framing this issue as such?

...the bad guys read our newspapers. They read our magazines. They watch CNN.

If we legalize torture on them, how long will it be before they make an example for us and take PFC Alicia Sweetbread into the backroom and stick a roadflare up her butt for a really nice video session to send to us?

Get real you jackasses.

I would venture to say it has been done already without prompting from us

Do you really think PFC Lynch broke her legs when she was throw from the wrecked humvee?

And you think this hasn't already happened? I can still see the Hanging Burnt body's tossed over that Bridge from a couple years ago.. I can also visualize the images of them cutting off the heads of their captors... I can still recall the shallow graves of our fallen members dismembered out back of some hospital where they captured that lost convoy truck...

I can turn on the TV daily and hear about some Suicide Bomber Straping his ass all over a street and killing 10-20 people...

you think that if we play nice and announce we're going to play nice.. these sick bastards are going to let up one little bit?

let me spell it out for you Y O U R W R O N G!

Do you think that "these sick bastards are going to let up one little bit" IF we torture them? I have no problem with killing them. I just believe that torture doesn't benefit the US in any way. If your point is to kill them, then kill them. If your point is to intimidate them, kill them. If your point is to persuade them, kill them. Torture is stupid and wasteful. No questions just shoot in the back of the head.

I don't agree with a lot of the handwringing from the left over what constitutes torture (hooding a prisoner for transport does not, in my judgment, amount to torture). That being said,

1. Torture is categorically wrong. The terrorists are grossly immoral because they engage in such activities. We recognize their barbarism as such. Do we want to be barbarians too?

2. Because it is wrong, it is wrong to ask our servicemembers or anyone else to engage in torture.

3. To involve ourselves in any way in the torture of prisoners debases us as a people and undermines the moral force behind our cause.

Just my 2 cents.
