On a tour of Alaska, the Pope went to the mountains for some sight seeing.

He was cruising along when suddenly there was a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods. A helpless environmentalist, wearing a "Save the Whales" T-shirt was struggling frantically, trying to free himself from the jaws of a 10 foot grizzly.

As the Pope watched horrified, a group of loggers came racing up. One quickly fired a .44 magnum into the bear's chest. The other two reached up and pulled the bleeding semiconscious environmentalist from the bear. Then, the three loggers threw the bear onto the bed of their truck while the other one tenderly placed the injured environmentalist in the back seat.

The Pope said to the loggers, "I give you my blessing for your brave actions! I heard there was a bitter hatred between loggers and environmental activists, but now I've seen with my own eyes that love overcomes differences."

As the Pope drove off, one of the loggers said, That was the Pope. He has access to all God's wisdom." Another logger said, "he may have access to all God's wisdom, but he sure doesn't know anything about bear hunting..... By the way, is the bait

holding up okay or do we need to go back to town and grab another one?"

I lived in Alaska for a few years and the Grizzly is one majestic animal that is for sure.

I used to fly missions into Katmai National Park (Where the McNeil River Falls is...the place you see on TV of the grizzlys catching salmon) in support of King Salmon Air Force Base and the Park Service. I learned to love and respect the Grizzly....and to always carry a .44 revolver on the hip when fishing or blueberry picking....along with a bell tied to my ankle.

I used to bowhunt for blackbear, but I never hunted Grizzly. Blackbear is for food, but Grizzly is purely sport for their hide and their gall bladder. I don't like sport hunting, and will not do it.

Funny joke though.

"Blackbear is for food, but Grizzly is purely sport for their hide and their gall bladder"

Why did that sound dumb?

Black Bear is used for food and Grizzly is not.

I happen to enjoy me a good Black Bear Stew, and wish I had some in the freezer now....but I don't.

When you hunt Black Bear you actually utilize the meat. It's a bit greasy depending on the time of the season, but makes a pretty darn good sausage and hamburger. I don't know of a single hunter in Alaska that doesn't use the meat of the Black Bear (if they hunt them at all).

Grizzly is not a good food source....the meat is too tough, and definately way too greasy. It tastes really nasty too. The only thing Grizzly's are hunted for are sport. Usuaully folks will keep their hides, and their gall bladders too. Their hides because they look nice as a rug, and their gall bladders because a grizzly's gall bladder will get you about $5000-$9000 on the black market in China, Korea, or a few other countries. It's a big market, just as rhino horn is.

To you it sounded a tad dumb, to me as a bowhunter that spent a few good years in Alaska, it makes perfect sense.......

Of course, where I come from we used to hunt squirrel and eat that too.....

Ditto Andy's comment. When I went fly fishing up in Alaska our guide carried an Alaskan CoPilot Rifle.

One seriously nice portable gun and a pretty good joke.

I had Black Bear stew ,from Alaska, a month or so ago at the Black Horse Inn during our last herf there. It was very good but then again the chefs there know what they are doing.

Bear Meat Loaf

2 lb ground meat

1/2 cup milk

2 eggs

salt and pepper to taste

1/4 tsp. thyme

1/4 tsp. oregano

3/4 cup tomato sauce

1 cup onion, minced

1 1/2 tsp. dry mustard

1 cup bread crumbs

1/2 green pepper, finely chopped,

I also add 1 small can of mushrooms or fresh mushrooms.

Bake at 350 until done (about an hour).

When it looks close to being done, maybe 15 minutes,

I spread either BBQ sauce or ketchup over the top.

Was this a joke, or an opportunity to tell us about our adventures in Alaska?

Some people name drop. I've read that it's due to insecurities.

just how i see it, but hunting any bear is for sport. even if you eat the kill, you didn't hunt it for necessity

now i'm not against hunting, but you are the one that made the distinction between sport and food

i think they are both sport. but i'd rather someone eat their kill than just get the trophy

but again....i don't know much

Charlie,

When someone (me) reads a joke, and it brings up some really fond memories that they feel like typing onto the thread, why do you call that bragging?

Should we just read the joke and all post "good joke Pablo" "Hey, that's a funny one," or "ha ha," and then go on to the next thread?

Everyone is reading the post, and some folks now are discussing the ethics of hunting, and the delicious taste of bear meat. This is called dialogue, and it's no different than if we were sort of sitting around talking.

It's not bragging....it's just having something to share and discuss.

This board would be really boring if everyone just made "great post" comments to every poster.

It didn't seem like bragging to me, but I DO think that choosing a bow to hunt bear qualifies as a decision influenced by the "sport" aspect of hunting as opposed to the utility aspect of killing for food.

Mr. Adroomi, sir? (trying to be respectful)

It is my opinion that you seem to have been everywhere and done everything by the way you post about this and that. It makes one feel that your posts are dubious, at best.

You seem to be the guy that hears a story and, as luck would have it, you have a better one.

In my humble opinion it makes you come off looking pompous and arrogant.

But thats just me, no flaming intended, of course.

Yes....but please realize, I was talking about hunting "purely" for sport. In other words, NOT eathing the animal.

Subsistance hunting is a whole 'nother subject, and I don't think any of us qualify.

I did in high school.

I would save my money from lunch for beer.......then fish between school and work so I could have something to eat.
