aren't you tired of paying for all these criminals on "life without parol"?
ever been in a prison and seen how they got it?
let me tell you, it would make you sick to your stomach if you see how these people are treated and you wanna pay for it.

The use of the death penalty here in Texas is one thing that makes me ashamed...

Yes - I was assuming that we could arrange it such that they are never paroled - barring evidence that shows they are indeed innocent, that is.

so would life without parole

richokeeffe wrote:

Yeah... but you're PAYING to keep them alive, fed, clothed and housed for the rest of their lives. Not to mention the TV, the gym equipment, books, computers, etc...

Only because of the time it takes for all the appeals and all the lawyer fees associated with it. If they plead guilty, or there is scientific proof they did it... you get 3 days to say your goodbye's. That'd cut down on the cost BIG TIME.

That is a whole lot stricter standard than it takes to convict someone and assign the death penalty.

I don't know that you can accept a guilty plea. Too much chance of mischief in obtaining that guilty plea.

And I don't know what form of scientific proof could be absolutely 100 percent certain that we do not kill an innocent person in the process.

In theory, the review process that a death sentence goes through filters out the cases that are sketchy, but I dunno.

For those who oppose the death penalty because it costs MORE than life without parole, let me ask you this:

Would you be in favor of it (the death penalty) if it were cheaper?

Besides the reasons listed above, I also find it objectionable that there are only poor folks on Death Row.

Unloess the execution occurs quickly, it costs more $$ to jail a death-sentance prisoner than to keep them in prison for the rest of their lives. I also think that the death sentence appealate procedure(s) needs to be streemlined in a major way- or we simply need to just give people life sentences as a matter of expense.

Don't forget, lifers will waste a ton of taxpayer $$ appealing life sentences too.
Oh yes they do. Lawyers love it. They get paid.

I just find it odd how the majority of folks are pro one and anti the other. or vice versa

Makes sense to me that if one believes in the sanctity of life that killing someone in the death penalty is inconsistent. Or, if you do not believe in the sanctity of life (pro-choice) that you ought to be ok with killing a criminal.
