I figured I would post my "Rookie" mistake for all to see. I started my "obsession" about 7 months ago......Trying to be a bargain hunter, I started searching the web. I landed on the INFAMOUS Thompson Cigar site. Bought a cheepie Humi and some (as someone else called them) Dog rockets. These things made me never want to put another cigar in my mouth again!!! What the heck am I supposed to do with these things? Wait, I know. Instead of sending hate mail to someone, i'll send these pieces of garbage. That should get my point across. What a waste.
Good news though; I've realized my mistake and have since gone on to bigger and better things. Macanudo, Montecristo and Punch, etc...
My question to everyone is this......What is the absolute WORST cigar you've ever smoked?
Rookies be warned, If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Don't beat yourself too badly about the Thompsons ... it could've been worse ... I've bought some that were ... in fact, I still have a few that're bad enough I'd swap 'em to you for those Thompsons ... LOL

Thanks but no thanks SteveO, I found something to do with them after all....Seems the dog just loves to play fetch with these sticks!

You might think that my being a cigar smoker of a far longer time than a few months, I'd know what I liked and buy nothing else ... NOT !!

It'll be intesting to see how many others admit to the same thing, but I'm constantly experimenting with stuff I've not tried before and not all the experiments are successes ...

Also, don't turn all those Thompsons into 'fetch sticks' ... as you attract cigar smoking friends, you'll find some are rather non-discerning ... perhaps you'll have someone move in next door to you like I did ... a guy who drinks wine that comes in a box and will rave over any cigar I give him ... mark my words, those Thompsons an insurance policy on your good smokes ... keep 'em ... they'll come in mighty handy

Oh man, can I relate to this. Even though I've been enjoying cigars for 20 years now, my insatiable desire to try new things inevitably leads on occasion to some blind (or rather bland) alleys. Steve is right about the cruddy stix, save some of them for neophytes that won't know the difference. Of course, as their tastes develop, they will know the truth and no longer be your friends. And I will admit, too, to falling for a similar humidor package deal at one point, which led to my all time worst cigar--the Valiente. Utterly unsmokable. On the other hand, to be fair, said competitor has put out some okay items as well, i.e. the Belmondo maduro. Point being, you can find both little-known gems and absolute hairballs almost anywhere. But don't let this put you off, seeking out new things is half the fun.

Ok Steve, I'll admit it too. I have my favorites, some cost as little as 1.00 a stick and are available all the time but I still experiment. Its a mood thing I think. I have to admit that most of the time I am disappointed but once in a while I hit upon a gem. Latest good one were some Pimp Sticks. I wouldn't make a habit of these but they are not bad for a change. Latest bad ones are some Montiquilla Tapa Negra, got a good deal but I have not enjoyed the ones I've tried so far. Hoping that about a year in the Humador improves them or else I'll be handing them out at Bar-B-Q's next summer. Oh well, such is the life of a cigar smoker.

I gotta say that the worst cigar I ever had was a Lars Tetens. I don't remember the trendy size name but it was like a small robusto.

Part of the reason I consider it the worst was because of it's high price tag. It really made me feel sick, I couldn't stand the taste and it took a whole day to get rid of it. The widely used description of "urinal pucks" is pretty accurate, IMFO. In fact, I still think of that cigar when seeing a urinal mint.

Tamborils are a close second.

Their humidors are for the most part the same ones you see everywhere. The "house" brand cigars should be steered clear of. I've been burned, too. Who buys those things, anyway? There must be a vast ocean of the uninformed out there.

(timidly raising hand) I also got my first humidor thru a "good" deal. The box was the only good thing about it. Crappy humidifier and analog hygrometer and cigars.

I used to think that a five pack of Dutch Masters out of the store was a good cigar. But then a friend turned me onto "real" hand rolled cigars and it has been downhill ever since. Well that is what my wife thinks. There are so many good cigars out there and so little time.

But I agree with Bud451. A Lars Teton 5 pack was the last "bad" cigars I got. I couldn't even give them away. People kept telling me they smelled like the restroom in the bus station....69

tough to argue with a lot of the nominees for 'worst cigar' that've been mentioned so far, but you're gonna have to go a long ol' way to beat those flavored Hobos ... my neighbor got some of those a year or so ago and rushed right over to share one with me ... ugh!

Another cigar that ranks right up there among the worst is Centurion ... those have about the same flavor and draw as a 7" length of galvanized pipe with a cap on both ends ...

I just recalled a cigar that was even worse than the aforementioned Valiente. I was in a cigar shop several years back, but very low on money at the time--all I could afford was some bargain brand called W & D; this should have been warning enough to abstain. Peat bog in a wrapper is my recollection, though thankfully the most painful aspects of the memory have been largely repressed. Do yourself a favor and avoid this Woodchips & Dirt brand if you are unfortunate enough to receive one.

Lars Tetens..... tasted like the tail of a skunk that was fished out of the cesspool down at the slaughterhouse.
