If they aren't essential, why are they being paid for with tax dollars?

This is the political forum right? You really have to ask that question?

I had the same question, 8track. Deficit out of control, and we have 800,000 nonessential Federal Employees. Why?

These employees are needed to administer to the bailout funds given to states, counties, and cities so they could avoid laying off government workers when tax revenue fell during the recession.

Don't jump to too many conclusions... among these are National Parks staff, Smithsonian (and all) Museum folks, military intelligence folks, tons of Federal courthouses, Veteran Affairs, All IRS, folks who answer social security, medicare and medicaid questions, passport processing, much of the EPA and on and on......

Even though they are "non-essential", many of these are jobs that you will hate doing without in the long term - that's part of how the politicos make shutdowns more dramatic.

The rule of thumb for essential employees (at least in my state) is: if your job duties would have a probable expectation that you work on Thanksgiving, you are essential. There are a whole passel of jobs that do not meet the essential criteria that are in fact essential

Because we have a large number of federal programs and agencies that should not be there at all.

The IRS. ATF. Medicare, Medicaid and social security. All other federal welfare programs. Start there and the budget would start to swing into line with how much money there actually is.

This slug says she can’t afford to lose her check if the government shuts down when the median income for a family is $46,000:

Democratic congresswoman complains she can’t afford to give up her paycheck in the event of a shutdown

With 8.8 percent unemployment across the country and more than 8 million people claiming unemployment benefits, one California congresswoman wants people to know they’re not the only ones facing financial hardship. Who else might be? The lawmaker herself.
In an appearance on MSNBC Thursday, Democratic California Rep. Linda Sánchez talked about the downsides of a federal government shutdown. Some lawmakers, to the seriousness of the issue, have said they would forgo their paychecks in the event of that shutdown. Sanchez explained she just can’t afford to go along with that idea.

“I have to tell you that I live paycheck-to-paycheck, like most Americans,” Sánchez said. “I’m still paying off my student loans. I have a 2-year-old son who I have to support, and I have to maintain residences on both coasts. It’s very difficult for me to say, ‘Hey, I can give up my paycheck,’ because the reality is, I have financial obligations that I have to meet on a month-to-month basis that doesn’t make it possible for me.”
Members of Congress receive an annual salary of $174,000, whereas the median household income for American is a little over $46,000 annually. Nonetheless, Sánchez said it is really tough for her to stretch her paycheck that covers everything.

“Now, if you’re a member of Congress who is a millionaire, and there are quite a few members of the House and Senate that are, it’s really not a problem for them,” Sánchez said. “But they don’t share the experience that most Americans share, that I know, having grown up in a family of seven kids to immigrant parents that you have to really stretch a paycheck to make sure that it covers everything. And, you know, this suggestion that it’s so easy for every single lawmaker to do that, that’s just simply not the case for a lot of us.”

Some of the most brilliant minds that I've ever met were "Government workers". They could have easily worked & been leaders in the private sector.
Alas, many if not most, use terms like "ink pen", can't conjugate a verb correctly, are inveterate clock watchers, & think they have divine rights to their jobs and bennies. 😲

i saw a sanition worker complaining on the news about the union crackdowns. he was saying he only makes $35k a year...... lets get this right, you are a garbage man what the hell do you expect to make? $100k, plus you get a pension and benifits which are completely unrealistic when compared to the private sector. i get **** when i retire. if they even let me!

what bankrupted GM? uh, pensions and benefits! what is going to bankrupt the US? there is so much waste and no one wants to stop it. another liberal was on TV saying she hoped all the people on capitol hill getting furlough notices were teabaggers and they were getting what they deserved. it sucks, there are going to HAVE to be cut backs that will affect peoples jobs and lives. that is reality! we have been living beyond on means smoking a credit dream crackpipe the past 50 years. we borrow to fight wars, we borrow to send aid to unappreciative countries, we borrow to pay our own employees, we borrow borrow borrow!
