consider....

#1 The top 1 percent of all income earners already pay 39.5 percent of all federal income taxes.

#2 When you take all forms of federal taxation into account, the top 1 percent of all income earners pay 28.1 percent of all federal taxes.

#3 The top 20 percent of all income earners in the United States pay approximately 86 percent of all federal income taxes.

#4 One recent poll found that 64 percent of Americans are in favor of raising taxes on those that make $250,000 or more a year in order to help balance the federal budget deficit. Another recent poll found that 72 percent of Americans favor raising taxes on those making $250,000 or more a year.

#5 Approximately 45 percent of all U.S. households pay absolutely no income taxes at all.

#6 Overall, U.S. households are now receiving more income from the U.S. government than they are paying to the government in taxes. This is clearly not anywhere close to sustainable.

#7 During 2010, the U.S. government paid out a combined $2.3 trillion in unemployment benefits, Social Security benefits, disability insurance, Medicare benefits, Medicaid benefits, benefits for veterans, education assistance and other direct transfers of cash from the government to individual citizens.

#8 59 percent of all Americans now receive a government payout of one form or another.

The top 1% have 70% of the wealth. Using your stats they need to pay 30.5% more.

The bottom 40% of people have less than 1%.

You could take half of everything, EVERYTHING the bottom 50% have and it would be about what Obama is proposing as an increase in taxes for the top earners over 10 years.

The top .1 $ took home 2.6% of all the earnings in 1975. Today it's 10.4% (that's .1%)

The reason there are more poor people who need help is because the rules, laws, regulations are stacked against them. The results are obvious.

The economy is ruined by financial institutions and they are bailed out. The people effected by that failure who lost their money, homes and jobs get nothing.

So yeah, poor people are the answer to the debt problem.

Brain washed people who keep fighting for the economic benefits of the top are like, to channel Hank, Jews marching for Hitler.

Anybody can be subject to capital gains tax. It is not just for the wealthy. If you sell your house and make a profit, you pay capital gains tax at 15% just like the wealthy.

If the capital gains tax at 15% was such a travesty, President Obama would have changed it during his first two years in office when he had a Democrat-controlled congress.

“The Poor” according to our guvmet is a family of four with an income of $22,350 a year, or less.

Hell they don’t even do a good job edging the lawn and clean out our flower beds. “Working” as a short order cook when they have a family? Where is their sense of responsibility?

We all know the poor are poor because they are lazy. Anyone of them could be a doctor, or a millionaire, or both.

I’m all in! Let’s get these slobs to pay their fair share. And if they got no money, we should make them shine shoes at the airport or clean the bathrooms.

I don't "classify" as "poor" by the guvment, but I could classify myself as poor. I only make about $30,000 per year working as a high school teacher in Arkansas, and then during the summer, I work 3 jobs, one from around 7:00 - 3:00 in the heat doing research field work, then I cut wood on the side, and mow yards on the side as well. During the school year, I mow yards when the grass is growing, and clean skulls for local hunters, and trap during the winter for extra money as well.

My wife does not work. Her job is to stay home with our daughter, and to raise her. That is just something that we think is right to do, rather than have her raised by a stranger. Our family lives out of state as well, so nobody is close that can watch her. My wife staying home has caused us to sacrifice some things. We don't drive the best cars, nor do we live in the fanciest house, but we are blessed each day knowing that our child will grow up not having to worry about the baby sitter abusing her, or her daddy going to prison over that issue. 😰 We qualify for welfare, and food stamps, and all that crap, but we choose to do the right thing and work for what is ours, not accept a handout from those around the nation that are working to support their families.

Most of the people on this site would probably look at me and my family from the outside and say those people are just poor. You would say that I am poor because I am just lazy it seems. I guess I will just let you go on thinking that.

I for one am for a flat tax across the board. Say it be 10%, 12.5%, 15%. Whatever it is, I think that would be fair all the way from the bottom to the top. I do think that there needs to be reform in our welfare system as well though. When someone that smokes cigarettes is taking my money to buy their cigarettes, be it using a shell game to pay for them or not, I don't like it. I'd rather be able to buy cigars with that money than to have someone else do it. When you have a food stamp card and the "stamps" roll over each month and you buy $300 worth of gum in front of me in line at Wal Mart I should legally be able to take the closest thing I can get my hands on and stick it in your chest and watch you bleed to death! When I am struggling to put food on the table at times and I see people buying steaks, candy, cokes, and all sorts of crap and they pull out a welfare card to pay for it, something just isn't right!

It would be easy to go down and get registered for a card to stand in line with them and sit back and have a few more kids and rake in the cash while I did nothing. That in my eyes is not the right thing to do though. I guess we all have to answer for our lives one of these years. I guess I am just a poor white guy who is lazy, and I don't figure I'll become a doctor, or a millionaire any time soon, because it takes $$ to make $$. But don't expect to see me at the airport shining shoes, I have other jobs to tend to.

Have a great day,

Why is everyone so afraid of the flat tax? Rich or poor, it doesn't matter. Everyone should pay their equally proportionate share. If I am rich, I pay more because 15 percent of a lot of income is higher than 15 percent of little income.

I would agree that it is a wealth tax but not in the same sense that FuzzNJ and Brewha want.

You pay a tax rate on your house. The guy next door pays the same tax rate even though that property is owned by Warren Buffett and he owns 50,000 houses.

It is missing the desired punitive element. Same thing with sales tax, gasoline tax, utilities taxes, capital gains tax, dividend tax, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax. You pay the same as Warren Buffett.

Federal income tax is pretty much the only place where we have punitive taxation.
