In reality, I don't believe that anyone can make the recession end all that much sooner. The economy can be tinkered with, for better or worse. Better could stretch the downturn out and spread it more widely- kind of like the difference between a set of stairs and a ramp-both leading to the same landing. Worse could make it much worse.

This recession will begin to end end when we stop pissing money away in Iraq and Afghanistan and stop turning everything into "me v. you", "us v. them" and "if you don't agree with my politics, then you are an idiot" behavior and thinking. -and the worldwide recession improves so that we can sell goods and services.

The only thing that I think could get us out of this more quickly would be a repeat of WW II or some other international disaster of a magnitude similar to WWII (if that is even possible anymore), where we amped up production of military and other goods to sell to our allies and then entered the War. This took a size-able portion of our work-force (now unemployed or under employed, and sent them overseas. The long-run benefit of this is that we aided and reconstructed Europe and Japan- and they became great trading partners for decades. Now, they don't need us anymore.

It is going to take at least another good five-years plus for there to be any opportunity for there to be any real, palpable difference in our economy.

Yeah, and the job leaves my head spinning.

I write off everything I am allowed to. I pay taxes from my business and self when I earn a profit that gets taken out of the business. I pay a part-time, independent contractor, legal secretary/paralegal $25/hour and she pays her own taxes. I no longer insure two families, just myself alone. My purchases of goods and supplies is way off what it used to be. if I can turn my law practice around, I will be happy to pay a boat-load in taxes again. In the meantime, I am still paying off the IRS...

It makes you wonder about the misanthropic disdain of someone who would explore the topic of ‘why the poor don’t employ people’.

Honestly – If you have ever been exposed to poverty, the question is distasteful.

I believe the point here is that taxing those who have worked to make their money and pay taxes shouldn't be keep carrying the load for those that refuse to better themselves. There is no reason in today's society for individuals to keep feeding at the public trough. Every able bodied person can if he or she wants find a program of some sort to help themselves get out of poverty but most find it easier to just sit back and let others support them. It just bewilders me how so many think by taxing those those that have wealth and giving to those that don't helps anyone in the long run. I don't have a problem with helping those down on their luck but expecting it year after year, generation after generation. Eventually you hit a tipping point and unfortunately I think we are there and people are feeling it at both ends. Those that have worked and realized the American dream are tired of footing the bill and those that have done nothing but suck on the government teat now believe they are entitled to it. With a little prodding from our ''leaders'' they now think the gravy train is coming to an end thus the cry for class warfare has begun. The war on poverty began in what, the sixties? Almost 50 years and it has done nothing but kept people in it.
There is no easy solution for this and both parties are to blame for letting it get to this. But it is unfair to make those that have worked hard and succeeded to bail them (the politicians) out. Afterall, all they are doing is whoring for votes with this. It was their policies that brought us here and to think they are going to get us out of it by taking more from the haves is delusional.

The only exposure I know about poverty is that it doesn't sound like fun. I'd prolly do something about it if I found myself in that situation. Maybe take advantage of the fine educational institutions that our nation has or perhaps start my own business.

Yeah, you don't have to step in crap to know it's crap. Same goes for poverty. Giving people free stuff ins't the answer. It's made it worse! Hell, people South of the Border clamor here with both hands grabbing whatever isn't nailed down! Education...Welfare...Housing assistance...Jobs...Medical care...even a check.

Yeah...Poverty sucks.

Let's say it is never fair to wage "class warfare". i.e. no matter how much money the rich have or make, and how poor the poor are, nothing is ever done to try to equalize the gap.

There's actually quite a few good examples of this in history... some not too distant.

The serf and lord system in the middle ages. The serfs worked the land, but since the land is owned by the lord, the lord has them pay "rent" of sorts. Typically rent is however much the lord wants. Now, it's not to say the lord does nothing with the money. Part of it is used to equip some soldiers, which defends his land and keeps the serfs relatively safe from raiders. But in return for this, the serfs have no way of making enough money to raise their status. They will always be serfs. They could also move out--technically they are free--but they then must choose between joining with another lord (who will charge them just as much money) or living on their own and risking being robbed/killed by bandits, or even the soldiers of their ex-lord.

Is the serf waging "class warfare" if they want the lord to take less money? Or spend more on them? Should the serfs be grateful to the lords, since after all--serfs can't afford to own land or employ people?

We have it much better than the serfs, but as the economic gap between the middle and the upper class grows, it becomes more like it.

Is there any point at which the amount a CEO makes is no longer just? If a CEO makes 1000 times what the lowest employee at the company makes, is that okay? 10,000 times? After all, they must be worth it. You can't put a number on their value. And plus, the lower employees are probably lazy and not hardworking, or else they would be making 100 times what they are making. Right?

There is nothing wrong with rich people, but when someone achieves a certain magnitude of financial power, what they do with that power can have an impact on the rest of us. It can be used for good, or for bad. MOST rich people do good--they employ many people, providing them good jobs, from which they earn profit. But then there are those who only care about the money. They don't care about employing people, and are not grateful for the work and profit those people make them. They can **** over tens of thousands of people, and come away richer than ever, and don't seem to see anything wrong with that.

Those are the people the OWSers have a problem with.

I thought they have a problem with the 1%ers. That is a much larger group than just bad CEOs.

When the killing starts, I doubt anyone is going to take the time to sort out the good CEOs from the bad CEOs or the good 1%ers from the bad 1%ers.

Business is challenging right now. I 've had my biz for going on 12 yrs.
This will be the 1st year we haven't grown at leat 10%.
