President Obama unveiled his plan for a leaner, cheaper military Thursday in a briefing at the Pentagon. He said U.S. armed forces will retain the ability to fight terrorism and confront new threats from countries such as China and Iran.
"The tide of war is receding," Obama said in prepared remarks. "But the question that this strategy answers is what kind of military will we need after the long wars of the last decade are over. And today, we're moving forward, from a position of strength."
The new strategy is the result of months of study at the Pentagon. It reflects a high-stakes, high-wire balancing act by Obama as he faces a more austere budget climate combined with continued high U.S. responsibilities at home and overseas.
The plan already has run into opposition from Republicans on Capitol Hill and GOP presidential candidates, citing concern about paring back the military. In addition, conservative defense analysts say the plan steps away from the l ongtime U.S. commitment to be able to wage two major wars simultaneously.
There is no overt mention in the Pentagon's strategy document, however, that the U.S. is stopping its policy of being ready to fight two ground wars simultaneously, but the reduced size suggests that is the case.

Yes of course. The military budget which has metastasized as a result of the endless war on terror since 9/11 and which is a huge contributor to the national debt should never be infringed upon. What were once considered extraordinary expenses based on exceptional circumstances are now institutionalized as inviolable steady state needs. We must forget about nearly a trillion dollars in corporate welfare bailout money as well and We must keep the voters thinking it's all those non-war related, non-bailout expenses spent on education, social security and medicare that are driving the country off the economic precipice.

So you're saying the world is constantly getting safer.....Therefore we can reduce the size/scope of our military.

I sir disagree.Hell the borders of our own country are so porous and fragile.....it baffles me daily why we have not put more effort into securing this.I blame the entire DC culture for this..........all the bastids on both sides of the aisle.Yes this is going to cost..........So I say man it with the military.

Just guessing here but I guess it is going to take a large group of terrorist bringing a weapon of mass destruction into this country and killing thousands to get your attention.Go ahead and discount this as hyperbole........typical lib reaction to cold hard evidence staring them in the face.

Because the world only gets safer with Obama at the helm.[sarcasm]

GM deal moves electric car development to China -- a 'shakedown'?

A Chevrolet Volt at the China Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai. It was the first working Volt prototype in China. Sales of exported Volts are set to begin in China by year-end.CAPTIONBy GMUPDATE 11:40 ET with Girsky comments on deal, building Volts in China.

General Motors agreed in Shanghai today to develop an electric vehicle platform with longtime Chinese partner SAIC. It effectively moves GM's future electric vehicle development to China. Unclear is whether this would also lead to assembly of future EVs for the U.S. market in China.

The deal came as the Chinese government is pushing foreign automakers to give Chinese companies EV technology they lack, according to an Associated Press report. U.S. lawmakers have complained that China is "shaking down" GM to get Volt secrets. Electric vehicle development in the U.S. has been developed with extensive U.S. taxpayer funding.

Details of the plan were not provided, and GM has denied it will involve handing over intellectual property underlying the Volt.

GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky, in a conference call from Shanghai, said that neither SAIC nor the Chinese government have demanded Volt technology. Any future EV would, of course, draw on GM's Volt experience and technology. Under the deal, SAIC and GM will equally share the cost of developing a new all-electric vehicle, Girsky said.

GM plans to start exporting Michigan-made Volts to China by year's end, but isn't likely to sell many. The Chinese government is pushing electrics with a subsidy that amounts to about $19,000 per car -- but only if the car is made in China. No imports allowed. There also are tariffs on cars imported to China, which lawmakers argue are unfair and may violate world trade rules.

Girsky hinted that the Volt could eventually be built in China. "If we localize, eventually it won't have a tariff and it will get the subsidy. We have made no decision on if, when or where we build Volt in the future."

The deal with Chinese government-owned SAIC was signed during a meeting of GM's board in Shanghai β€” a visit underscoring China's importance to GM. It was the board's first meeting outside the U.S.

GM spokesman Jay Cooney said the companies will work together to develop a next-generation, fully electric car.

GM sees China, the world's biggest new-car market, as crucial to its future:

Shanghai is the site of GM's international headquarters and its successful venture with SAIC, which on Monday rolled out the 5 millionth vehicle since production began in late 1998.

The push for more advanced technology reflects China's frustrations with its continued weakness in automotive technology, analysts say. After 25 years of auto joint ventures that require local partners to hold at least a 50% stake, domestic automakers still lag behind global rivals in automotive engineering.

"China is not a technology leader in virtually any industry. The country has developed around low-cost production," said Bill Russo of consultancy Synergistics. "This is the irony, that the largest and biggest growth market has relatively weak domestic manufacturers."

An explosion in Chinese demand and sluggish sales in the recession-stricken West helped China overtake the U.S. as the largest car market in 2009. Last year, sales of passenger vehicles, excluding large buses, jumped by a third to 13.7 million vehicles.

Although growth in the overall market has slowed in recent months, GM's sales in China still jumped 13.4% in August from a year earlier to a record 205,885 vehicles.

A large share of the company's growth has come from sales of its mini vehicles in another venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling. But strong demand for foreign-brand sedans and sport-utility vehicles has also helped.

If we wish to continue the policy of being the global army for the One World/New World Order, we need a lot more money from our citizenry to pay for it. We can start with repealing the Bush tax cuts for everyone and then start talking about new taxes. Other options would be to start charging countries under our protection some sort of tribute fees like the Romans did.

Originally the plan was to "Provide for the Common Defense". Based on the US Navy's most recent recruiting ad campaign, it is now β€œAmerica’s Navy: A global force for good.”

Sounds like scope or mission creep.

For the first time in history a nation is paying another nation to just disappear from the "relevant" map or World's "super power".

It hasn't happened before.

The trade war, the debt and the surrender monkey that's sitting in the White House now are pretty much throwing in the towel and giving the shop away while they make millions on the "short sale".
