My kids (and, to some extent, Mrs. Monkey) are not fans - but I suspect they will explore it as they get past college.

Tons of big band/swing in the house growing up. an appreciation of the development of American music and how Louis Armstrong may have been the biggest influence on it, and I'm talking decades before Wonderful World and Mame, yech.

My father's brother was a well known vocal coach in NYC, relocated to Miami. Developed a method of power singing using the diaphram that is still used today and became known as a method named after him. Clients included Steve and Edie, Eddie Fisher, no Sinatras for sure but many from the next tier.

By the time I was 16/17 in the late 60's early 70's we reversed roles and my father was listening to my music.

How lucky can a kid get? or as fiddler tells me, how blessed could I be?

We didn't listen to a whole lotta music in my early years but when I turned 12, my older brother bought me one of those portable stereo sets that you could pack up and carry around. After that my Mom would buy some Glenn Miller, Lawrence Welk and other big band / orchestra type albums. My Dad liked Hawaiian music and Leonard Kwan, a slack key guitarist, was his favorite. The Monkees debut album was my first LP but that Christmas one of my aunties bought me "Sgt. Pepper's" and my musical direction changed forever.
