I don’t know why but I just couldn’t get into Television or Tom Verlaine’s solo albums. Mebbe ‘cause I was distracted by other New Wave / punk(ish) bands like the Talking Heads, The Cars, The Clash and, at the time, “new” artists like Tom Petty and Van Halen. I had also “discovered” jazz and country as well as a new genre, reggae, around then too.

But mebbe one of the most significant reasons were those pesky customers who would come into the record store where I worked and ask us to put on albums by Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, the soundtrack to “Saturday Night Fever” or other disco crap while they shopped. I mean, WTH, they already had those albums at home, why the flock you gotta listen to it when I’m working? Broaden your flockin’ horizons and listen to some good music, dammit!

So, with that being said, sorry Tom. I’ll hafta Spotify his stuff later on.

Disc 1 of a mixed set I call “Luau Music.”

I assembled the artists and songs to kinda, sorta replicate the music you’d hear at a Hawaiian luau. Started out with hapa-haole stuff but then transitioned to more classic traditional Hawaiian and then contemporary Hawaiian. However, when our computer died a couple years ago, I lost that playlist but thanks to Stinger88, I was able recapture it. Now that I’ve had a chance to relisten to it, it ain’t bad. Pretty good to put on and smoke a stogie out in the garage.

No, but RIP...I have a pc that's set as a jukebox...its on almost 24/7...I have over 3TB of MP3's and it's set to autoplay. t goes in a jumbled mess and spits out whomever wherever. The results I share are 98.2% of what's "On The Air" while I'm posting and reading the site. My wife knows my musical knowledge and we have a game where I have to guess the artist without looking. Bonus points for knowing the album.

Yes, the Talking Heads, Cars and Gang of Four pretty much waved over this band. Their output was relatively small, 4 releases and 2 live albums...that's Police and Clash criminal. Richard Hell's output with the Vovoids shows he wanted to get his music out there.

I always enjoyed them for what they were, even back in the day.

The Rolling Stones are missing their bassist (even though he's alive he wants NOTHING to do with them!) and their drummer...Sir Paul and Ringo are still out and about. Now THAT ticket...I would pay to see. Think of the material they could cover, especially when you have solo material to drag in as well.

I was out of the retail record biz by then but got a demo cassette of the album. I forget when but as vinyl was fading out, the record labels started giving out both promotional CDs and cassette tapes for the stores and store personnel. My friends in the biz still “took care of me” so it was nice to get a freebie or two every now and then.

Thank you Hawaii Public Library System!

Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers (2015 Deluxe edition)

About 10 years ago I finally got fed up with record companies releasing “Newly Remastered Expanded Super Duper Deluxe Collector’s Edition” CD sets of classic rock ‘n roll albums that I already had and most likely had purchased the “Remastered with Original Master Tapes” release that replaced my “First Time on CD” copy. Yes, I fell prey to the marketing b.s. Too many albums to name but there were a few that I kept searching for the Holy Grail release. Off the top of my head I believe the most I’ve chased after were the Allman’s “Fillmore East” and Derek & the Dominos “Layla” - 5, count ‘em 5 iterations each. A lotta money spent to listen to “Whipping Post” and “Why Does Love Have to be so Sad”. [gonzo]

My point? Oh, yah, I did have a point…now what was it? 🤔

Oh, that I stopped buying those money grabbing releases and wanted to thank the library for spending the money so that I wouldn’t…and that ultimately I would use those “saved” dollars on cigars! 🇨🇮

Podcast... Daily Stoic with Ryan Holiday. Merely scratching the surface of the concepts and the original philosophers (Seneca & Marcus Aurelius). Some of the concepts are ridiculously simple and obvious- which I never thought of. Drinking in the concepts. Got on this path at the cigar lounge when a former NYC badass turned member of the religious order of the Dominicans and I shared the same table. Interesting cat.

One thing I learned was there is a difference between Reaction and Response. Generally, you are going to react when you first encounter the situation. It is how you Respond which is the measure of the man. The more time between Reaction and Response, the better the results.

Learning it is fun. Applying will be my challenge.

Lou Reed - Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal + Lou Reed Live

My last “big assembly” project. Always knew “RnRA” was just a portion of the actual Dec. 21, 1973 concert and that “Live” was most of the rest but it wasn’t until the Remastered and Expanded version of “RnRA” in 2000 that the missing songs were finally released. Thought it be a nice challenge to make a disc with the songs in correct order with fade-ins and outs so there wouldn’t be abrupt transitions between songs. Finally got off my arse a couple years ago and worked on getting it done. Got it done and in the midst of burning copies and finishing the covers, our old iMac died. Managed to recover the files but hadda get creative in finalizing the covers. Took a lot of work and patience to get the project done but happy with the results.
