Sons of Hawai’i - “Red” album
An all-time classic. Many point to this album as the start of the Hawaiian Renaissance.

Loggins & Messina - The Best of Friends
One of my favorite groups from 1972 to 1975. They loved Hawaii and played here quite frequently. Probably saw them 3 times during their height.

Bee Gees, Saturday Night Fever

I remember when the album came out and all you seemingly heard on the radio were cuts from the soundtrack. Hawaii girl, Yvonne Elliman, fresh from touring with Eric Clapton, had a big hit, “If I Can’t Have You”, that was played ad nauseum. But man, I HATED disco so never seriously listened to the album. Despite my deep distain for it, gosh, did that album sell! Seemed like every 2 out of three customers that walked into our store, walked out with that album.

Three or 4 years ago I finally broke down and watched the whole movie. The opening scene with Travolta walking down the street with “Stayin’ Alive” is, imho, one of the best opening scenes of all-time. His swagger along with the beat is perfect!

I was channel surfing and caught a PBS special about the BeeGees...they were so popular and successful that some folks in Chicago in 1979 organized an anti disco (BeeGee) event, "Disco Demolition Night". Observers noticed that the BeeGees weren't the only vinyls that were trashed that night...many of the others were records by Black artists, so the event may've been racially motivated. Most performers of the disco genre were Black.

So, in a gesture of protest against a protest, albeit 45 years late, I dug out the Saturday Night Fever album, one of my all-time faves, and played it loud.

Delta - your “protest against a protest” is kinda, sorta a fine example of civil disobedience!

As much as I hate disco, there is one song that still gets my foot tapping:

But I guess I must be racist ‘cause the members of the group all happen to be white! 🤦

RIP Duane Eddy (86) R&R Hall Of Fame 1994

He was my teenage idol and a local boy when he recorded Rebel Rouser. His twangy guitar became popular and influenced many others such as the Beatles the Boss and John Fogerty. I met him at the premier of the D!ck Clark movie Because They're Young when he did the theme song. (long story)

Loved that album too! Bought my copy in 1969 from the Downtown Singer (…yes, the sewing machine company…) store for the odd price of $3.37.

Edit: Since my CD copy is in storage, decided to listen to the album via Spotify. Didn’t know there was a 50th anniversary remixed version so went with that version. The problem with streaming apps like Spotify is that the frequency response sucks so I can’t really tell if the 50th anniversary version is worth getting. Goggled for reviews of the 2019 release and apparently it’s not worth getting. There’s also a 2002 remastered version that may be sonically better but for some reason, some songs are shortened by a few seconds. Guess I’ll just stick to my older CD, whatever limitations it may have.
