Question:
What is more similar to a genuine Muffaletta?
1. A submarine roll filled with italian cold cuts and that yummy olive salad.
2. A round italian bread with peanut butter.

Although you are correct that an authentic Muffa is made on the round bread, the important aspect is the ingredients.
I make a nice muffaletta olive salad once in a while and I always try to get the round bread. But it never tastes bad no matter what shape the bread is.

And when it comes to eating, I AM an expert.

The "comparison" was in response to your "definition".
The definition was technically incorrect because it requires the round bread but only suggests on the cold cuts and olive salad.
Truth be told, the best muffaletta I ever had was in New Orleans and it was on oval bread.
The horror!

And once again, I must qualify this post.
Because I am still an expert on eating.

Muffaletta is the name of the sandwich, not the green/black olive mixture. The olive mix is known as olivada.

I have to agree with those that feel a muffaletta should be served on a round bun at least 9" diameter. It's not just the shape or type of the bread...it's the sheer size of the sandwich that makes a muffaletta a muffaletta.

There's no shame in only being able to eat half a "true" muffaletta...It's that big.

I'm sorry, but what you have pictured is a sub pretending to be a muffaletta.

A Philly Cheese-steak sandwich isn't a Philly if you substitute Cheddar....it becomes a "Melt."

Right. The important aspect is the ingredients. The bun is an important ingredient.
