On a serious note, we probably are going about this in the smartest manner possible.
Think about it for a second. Oil is a non-renewable resource, the amount in existence is all we have.
Additionally, the value of this non-renewable resource will continue increasing as the known amount decreases.
Add to this, the absolute dependency every country has on oil...
So, you use your enemy's oil first, paying a relatively low amount per barrel. When that's all gone, you own all the oil.
