Go ahead and privatize PBS. NPR, too.

But with full awareness of how big a percent $445M takes out of three and a half trillion dollar budget....my math sucks, but I suspect there's a few zeros after the decimal

Kool-aid drinkers seems to be an extremely accurate description.

It's hyperbole for effect, I understand that (unless you actually believe that Obama thinks he's god, and actually think that the entire country will be smoking wreckage in 4 years because of him, if that's the case you maybe need to re-examine what salient facts are leading you to believe this). However, the hyperbole you are using is the same crap spouted from the right-wing talk shows. That, juxtaposed with your accusation of other individuals "regurgitating" some sort of left wing statements is irony at its sweetest.

Yes, our peevish president got Mitt-slapped on national TV last night

The real loser last night? Jim Lehrer. Seriously, could he have looked any more hapless and impotent, vainly trying to cut Romney off while feeding response lines to Obama? Lines I might add that Obama failed to pick up, probably because he kept looking down at his shoes. When he snarled "I had five seconds before you interrupted me!" that pretty much sealed our peevish president's fate.

Your time is up Barry. Go home.

Stacy McCain's doing his Happy Dance. And why not? Obama got Mitt-slapped. It left a mark.

Nobody — and I mean, nobody — expected such a one-sided ass-whupping.

That's what happens when you're used to softballs on The View instead of substantive questions about your policies and record. Romney hit Obama hard, and often. "Trickle-down government" is destined to be a classic line. A bureaucrat in every house, car, boat, school, factory, office, restaurant, supermarket, and playground! Obama would regulate freedom out of existence if he could, and he just might if he gets a second term. Romney made that point abundantly clear.

Romney's best line of the night, on taxes: "You said you get a deduction for taking a plant overseas? Look, I've been in business 25 years, I have no idea what you're talking about. I think you need to get a new accountant."

Maybe Obama relied on TurboTax like Tim Geithner did. It's just "a-rith-me-tic", right? Obama said a-rith-me-tic with such disdain I wonder if he even knows how to tally up his own scorecard on the golf course. Obama-math! That's when you add $6 trillion dollars to the deficit after promising to cut it in half and then accuse Romney of only wanting to cut it by $4 trillion.

I think the voters are smart enough to see through that. Well, the non-Obamabot voters anyway.

Obama tried to rally on health care, embracing the term "Obamacare". But he dug himself into a hole there too.

Obama: They're not "Death Panels," they're just panels made up of expert doctors who'll decide if your treatment should be paid for.

Because the Cleveland Clinic is a model for what medicine should be. And gosh-darnit he's gonna make every doctor's office in America a clone of the Cleveland Clinic! One size fits all, just like Moochelle's school lunch debacle. When Romney pointed out the obvious fact that the Cleveland Clinic succeeds because it's a private institution free to do things however it sees fit you could just see the wind go out of Obama's sails.

Voters notice stuff like that too.

I also liked Romney's green energy boondoggle zinger — "You don't just pick winners and losers, you pick losers." Yup. And if you voted for Obama you picked the biggest loser of 'em all.

So of course we have to brace ourselves for the lapdog media's inevitable "Obama, the Comeback Kid!" narrative. Don't buy it. What's he going to come back to? Four more years of the same failed policies?

Romney 2012! Because the business of America is business.

I could honestly care less. I understand the exceptionally small amount saved by cutting it isn't much on its own, but combined with hundreds of other similarly small services, can make an impact on the yearly deficit. However, I haven't seen Mitt give very many examples of programs he would cut, especially those with significant line items, and he won't cut Defense spending, which is an area that can certainly use it.

The GOP wants to cut PBS simply because they view it as a left-wing propaganda station. If they would provide a list of other services that will be cut, I have no problem losing it with the tightening of the belt. Until then, it's just a useless talking point as the 0.012% of the budget saved will make zero difference.

Disney buys Jim Henson’s Muppets

The Muppets are back. Some may wonder why characters from Jim Henson's "The Muppet Show" are suddenly popping up and making appearances in movie theater previews and commercials, considering that the show's original run ended over three decades ago. Advertisements in all forms are building up to the Thanksgiving in-theater premiere of an entirely new "The Muppets" movie. This movie is not, however, a Jim Henson Co. production, but a Disney one.

According to the New York Times, in 2004 Disney signed a $75 million deal with Jim Henson Co. that gave Disney a three-year period to develop movies and television shows with four years of consulting assistance from Jim Henson Co. on strategic advice for reproduction. This was not the beginning of Disney and the Muppets' relationship, though. In 1990, when Henson died from a bacteria infection and his five children took over the company, they had to first get through a court battle with Disney concerning the terms of a Muppet attraction completed for Walt Disney.

Once they set out to develop the future Muppet adventures, they ran into problems, beginning with the release of "Muppets from Space" in 1999 being a complete flop in the box office. The next year, they sold the family business to the German media company EM.TV & Merchandising for about $680 million, but according to the New York Times, "as the German conglomerate slumped under crushing debt, insider-trading and fraud investigation, the Muppets stagnated further." Jim Henson Co. then bought back the characters for $78 million, only sell them once again in this new deal with Disney.

Muppet Central News states that the Disney transaction includes all Muppets assets: Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the whole batch of iconic characters, as well as the Muppet film, television library and all associated copyrights and trademarks.

"In the months before his death in 1990, my father Jim Henson pursued extensive discussions with The Walt Disney Company based on his strong belief that Disney would be a perfect home for the Muppets," Jim Henson's daughter, Lisa Henson, said in an interview with Muppet Central News. "As such, the deal we announced today [February 17, 2004] is the realization of my father's dream, and ensures that the Muppet characters will live, flourish and continue to delight audiences everywhere, forever."

The long hiatus between Muppets appearances posed a financial problem for Disney. It appeared that people had largely forgotten about or lost interest in the Muppets, and the $300 million Disney estimated to generate from the Muppets was not met. Ironically, the plot of the new movie involves the Muppet characters having to overcome the fact that they are no longer famous.

Point is, there is always a level of merit to every program. That is why we need to apply the test to everything: Is it worth borrowing money from China to pay for the program?

The argument can't be "well we spend more on military, therefore it's OK to pay for this too". If we do that, then virtually every program will get funded on the ho chi min credit card.

Wait, are you advocating that content creators should lose the rights when they are featured on another company's medium? It looks to me like PBS also benefited from the arrangement, as it gets to feature a popular educational television series. Jim Henson's creation of the muppets pre-dates PBS.

That doesn't even mention that the sale of the muppets did not include Sesame Street or the charaters that appear on the show, since those are owned by a non-profit organization that develops education content for public broadcasting worldwide (including PBS). This organization receives the majority of its funding from licensing. Henson was only brought in to create muppets specifically for Sesame Street, but he was not a creator of the show.

For the record. I'm a registered Libertarian, and have been voting such since '96. I don't listen to talk radio and never watch Fox News. I dislike both the Reps and Dems, but feel the Dems are a far greater threat. Both parties are destroying this once great nation, but the Dems and Obama are doing it at hyper speed. The only way to save this country is to elect Libertarians or Constitutionalists to power, but with all the "what free stuff are you going to give me?" types out there, that will never happen. This nation is done. The only question is, who's going to flush it the fastest?

I agree that we should have a measuring stick, but I have one complaint about your methodology. China owns about 1.1 trillion in US foreign debt (roughly the same amount as Japan) and that number has actually been trending down. The current public debt is around 16 trillion, so China holds a whopping 6.9% of our debt. I have no clue why we are concerned about China. If nothing else, they're unlikely to ever do anything that could harm us as it would ruin their holdings and their economy. They are much more dependent on us than the other way around.
