Okay...

So this article claims 68% of republicans believe in demonic possession and the cited article goes on to the other percentages of belief in things like ghosts.

http://www.salon.com/2012/11/02/poll_most_republicans_believe_in_demonic_possession/

Now, the article is obviously trying to juxtapose climate change (something with some level of scientific evidence) with demonic possession (something which has no evidence whatsoever)... But I don't particularly care what you choose (evolution? whatever)...

Does anyone on this forum actually believe in some sort of supernatural crap, but refuse to believe any random controversial scientific topic? Just curious....

Not for nothing, you sound a little possessed yourself, bub.

Sure, I believe in demonic possession just as I do in chemical brain inbalance. Perhaps there's a symbiosis.
Btw, have you ever been to the looooong stairs in Georgetown where the Jesuit was demonically pushed, er, tripped in the Exorcist?

What is salon.com?

As for supernatural stuff, you need to be more specific.
You talking religion, or just ghosts.

And to take it further, you may need to include extraterestrials. Which appeal more to the scientific crowd then they do to the religious, thereby skewing your numbers not insignificantly.

You are fixated with polls, which by and large are entirely unscientific because they are biased in interpretation.
Case in point is the 68% figure you cite above. That's a ridiculous percentage unless your were asking about members of congress...

Of course Demon possession is real. Look at the evidence. 47% voting to re-elect Obama. Demon possession is the only plausible explanation.

The poll was specific. I wasn't, because I didn't want to recreate it (lazy).

Although the extraterrestrial part is an interesting concept. It's a wide open category tho, (ie, someone who believes aliens came to earth and probed their butt is a different concept than believing that there could be bacteria-like stuff growing on another planet somewhere in the entire universe).

I don't think demonic possession is a choice....... take Chucky for example, he was just an average dude doll thing.. he didn't ask to be possessed.... 😟

Let me preface this by saying I find 98.2% of all polls to be misleading.

But regarding the ET's, I was referring to sightings and the belief that there is INTELLIGENT life elsewhere in the universe. Nobody except a few lab rats care about some bacteria or shapeless blob that carries DNA.
Let's face it, if someone is religious enough to believe in demonic possession, then they believe in a god, and god made MAN. he didn't make Aliens, lest there would be other chapters in the good book.

So when we say "super natural", we have to be specific. Otherwise we'll comingle results from two opposing viewpoints.

Now, I think it would be easy to "prove" with scientific theory and mathematical calculalations that there is a likelihood of superior intelligence somewhere in the universe, and that they may have the ability to visit earth. But it would be extremely difficult to "prove" the existence of ghosts/demons/spirts of any kind using traditional scientific methods.

Yet, I suggest that you are equally as likely to encounter either.
Or neither, as the case may be.

Why is that, Mr. Science?

An interesting proposition, and one I find to be completely incorrect.... but interesting.

As for the "ETs" visiting earth. That's as flimsy and fabricated as any religious belief. There's no verifiable proof, nothing that holds up to scrutiny.

As for there being some level of "life" somewhere in the universe, that's unproveable (until we travel to a place where it exists). However, if you believe in evolution, and you believe in statistics and probability theory, then it is reasonable to state that the odds are strong there is some form of life elsewhere, with the odds reducing as you increase the complexity of said life. This is in NO WAY a proof though, just probability theory.

You seem to think that we are equally likely to encounter some ghost/demon/spirit as we are to encounter some form of non-earth based life though. Am I correct in that re-statement?

I'm going to say you're likely correct (if by "we" you mean you and i) simply because within our short lives neither of us will encounter the statistically likely extra-terrestrial life (since that level of space travel is not happening any time soon) and the other category doesn't likely exist.

However, if you're using the "we" as humanity... then you're probably wrong. One category has a probability associated with its existence, something which given sufficient time will ultimately occur. The "supernatural" category has no probability associated with its existence, and no evidence of its existence. Time is not on its side.
