I took an observation of yesterday's slap down on the President's gun grab...saw an article where they claimed it was a virtual non-issue...2 of you saw something that wasn't there but thank you very much for making me do a better job of showing the point that I was making.

Guns Remains Low Priority for Americans

The 4% of Americans mentioning guns as the nation's top problem is the same as it was last month, and comparable to the 6% in February and 4% in January and December, the last measure having been taken just after the mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. Prior to these past several months, in recent years virtually no Americans mentioned guns as the nation's top problem.

DMV,
I think we both might be surprised to find that our basic political philosophies are probably very similar. However, I have allergic-like reactions to hyperbole, misuse of statistics, quotes taken out of context, etc. I don't know if it my filters and interpretation have changed, but I sense that in recent years you have drifted over the edge in your strident calls with little regard for facts or context.

Curious as to who you see as your audience? Those that disagree are unlikely to be persuaded by Chicken Little. If validation by those that tend to agree without regard to 'critical thinking' is what you seek, I suspect you've come to the right place. I'll bow out.

Gallup is only credible when they say what we want them to say or can twist it to fit our needs. otherwise they are worthless. the only real sources of info are things like dailynews.uk and infowars.

No, it was there...as both dstieger and I pointed out. DMV, you failed to recognize it. That's not our problem. I also wouldn't call it a "slap down," but that's neither here nor there.

Let's have a simple analogy...ice cream.

Let's say we polled all of CBid asking "What is *the* best flavor of ice cream?" Chocolate wins with 34% of the vote, vanilla gets 21%, strawberry gets 17%, etc...etc...with "butt" only getting one vote. For those of use who voted "chocolate" our voting for chocolate does not mean that we do not like strawberry, and there is no way of determining such because the poll did ask for rank-ordered preferences. It asked for the *best* flavor of ice cream.

Let's say we took another poll about strawberry ice cream. We asked the question "Do you like strawberry ice cream?" 90% say "yes."

You can ignore the article if you want to. If it makes you feel better take it completely out of the OP. It was put there for only one reason to begin with. To show that this President isn't paying attention to the issues Americans want handled.

It doesn't take away from his grandstanding the FBI presser and pushing it back in a different timeslot so he could chastise the House and Senate with his (what's this thread called?) chest thumping and talk down.

No, he flew those survivors around...used them like pawns...wrung out their misery for his political agenda and he failed. He didn't get what he wanted and he pouted with lil Joey. Stomped his feet about how he;s gonna put his all in everything from now on. Well, Mr. President...step up your game and do your J-O-B. Put 100% of yourself into it like almost everyone else before you did. Layoff the golf...if you have to play at Camp David...nobody will see what you're doing. Tackle the Economy and Unemployment like you said you were going to. Just tossing taxpayer money at the issues didn't work...putting Nobel Prize winners on it didn't either...doesn't mean it's time for another vacation, victory lap or White House gala for some marginal issue that doesn't come close. He went for the low hanging fruit and it didn't work.

The President’s Gun Tirade and You

President Obama’s lecturing little temper tantrum at the White House Wednesday should cause you some alarm.

What are we to think when the most powerful man in the country spits venom all over the Rose Garden, accusing opponents he lost to in a fair fight on Capitol Hill of lying, craven capitulation to political imperatives, and worst of all, not caring about dead children.

Is it not rational that someone who holds such views will take extralegal steps to advance his agenda? If his opponents are so corrupt, and if the “process” so corrupted, isn’t it his obligation to act outside of it?

“Even without Congress, my administration will keep doing everything it can to protect more of our communities,” Obama said. This bears watching.

Let’s review some of the president’s histrionics:

Families that know unspeakable grief summoned the courage to petition their elected leaders –- not just to honor the memory of their children, but to protect the lives of all our children. And a few minutes ago, a minority in the United States Senate decided it wasn’t worth it.

This is the slimiest charge of them all. It’s so disgusting it’s not even worth countering, but I will note that in the context of the gun debate, gun owner particularly care about children. That’s one reason why they want a gun in the house, to defend their babies.

A majority of senators voted “yes” to protecting more of our citizens with smarter background checks. But by this continuing distortion of Senate rules, a minority was able to block it from moving forward.

As I mentioned Wednesday, just about every bill in the Senate requires 60 votes before getting to a final up or down contest. Obama knows that.

But instead of supporting this compromise, the gun lobby and its allies willfully lied about the bill. They claimed that it would create some sort of “big brother” gun registry, even though the bill did the opposite. This legislation, in fact, outlawed any registry. Plain and simple, right there in the text. But that didn’t matter.

And unfortunately, this pattern of spreading untruths about this legislation served a purpose, because those lies upset an intense minority of gun owners, and that in turn intimidated a lot of senators.

The person who claimed you could keep the health insurance you have under Obamacare should be careful about calling others liars. But what’s more, Obama is demeaning himself, the presidency, and our democratic process.

Serious people have serious concerns about whether the the bill as written might foster a gun registry. Writing in the conservative legal blog Volokh Conspiracy and later in the National Review, David Kopel, a firearms expert and a law professor, explains how this could occur.

Continuing with Obama:

But the fact is most of these senators could not offer any good reason why we wouldn’t want to make it harder for criminals and those with severe mental illnesses to buy a gun. There were no coherent arguments as to why we wouldn’t do this. It came down to politics — the worry that that vocal minority of gun owners would come after them in future elections. They worried that the gun lobby would spend a lot of money and paint them as anti-Second Amendment.

And obviously, a lot of Republicans had that fear, but Democrats had that fear, too. And so they caved to the pressure, and they started looking for an excuse — any excuse — to vote “no.”

No, just because some disagrees with you, Mr. President, it’s not therefore about “politics.”

Many sincerely believe the new restrictions on private sales could make criminals – and prison inmates – of average people who are not completely familiar with a new law that has little benefits. As leading conservative gun issue expert John Lott explains, gun rights advocates believe background checks are not proven to prevent crimes and could hamper the ability of someone who needs a gun quickly to get it.

This is not the first meltdown Obama has experienced when his will is resisted. Let’s hope somewhere down the line – soon – this man who used to teach the Constitution learns to get more comfortable with it.
