7.62x39mm and 5.56x39mm are two of the most abundant and available cartridges on earth. I'll take the AK, any day. Have six upper receivers, my self.
The problem isn't going to be finding weapons or maintaining their reliability...people are still firing Revolutionary War muskets with 100% reliability. The problem is going to be finding ammo, and then after a handful of years, whether or not you can manufacture blackpowder at a high enough purity and flash point to use in smokeless rifle cartridges.
