Can folks file for unemployment if the furlough extends to Christmas or beyond? Are the unemployment offices considered essential? Anybody?

If furloughed they can file now. They have to pay it back if reimbursed later (rightly so)

If forced to work without pay they can not file. Trapped.

Working for an IOU you're required to work but there is no paycheck until sometime later when they resolve all this

Kind of like being laid off but not allowed to work somewhere else because the ethics committee can't approve it because they are laid off too.

do you have an unethical side job..?? 😕

Not currently affecting most people including me.

The first thing that should happen is that all of Congress should also not be paid during this shutdown and strip them of all benefits until they reach an agreement on these issues.

We will really drive off the cliff if we don't increase the debt ceiling mid-October. 🌫

Raising taxes takes money out of the economy. No new debt takes money out of. The economy. We need more, debt and lower taxes and things will be kiss-azz.

But forgive me for taking the diminutive Reich's perceived socialist point of view, but wouldn't raising taxes on the corporate & rich allow for more resources for the middle class & poor which they would in turn spend vs. hiding in overseas accounts & ventures? Trickle down theory has been largely discredited by many including it's author David Stockman.

Another interesting aside is that Kalifornia which until recently had a huge deficit, decided to make spending cuts AND increase taxes under Brown's governorship. They now supposedly have a nice surplus.

Spoke to my sister this afternoon. Her husband was furloughed or what ever you want to call it. He's been working on keeping up a govt website up all day, but no guarantee of pay and he can't seek employment elsewise with out ethics approval who is also on furlough.

...and the wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round......

I'm working but have no idea when I will get paid (I will for sure at some point). My wife is furlouhed and may not get paid depending what congress decides to do. I have no idea if and when my family will have any income but have to keep working. She can not work anywhere because it would require approval that is unavailable. She will also not apply for unemployment out of stubborness and not liking the concept of it (me too but I'm pragmatic (code I can be bought LOL))
