Funny you should ask. When I was a kid I always thought that the Republican Party had a serious branding issue, since the Democratic Party had, literally "democrat" in the name. Before I had been inundated with this political hissy-fit BS we see now, my first reaction was that a democrat was a supporter of the democratic philosophy.

Funny enough, it's bull-sh#t like this article that destroys people's ability to understand the nuances in life.

you failed to answer the question.. people who don't know much about Lincoln, other than he freed the slaves, will think he was a Democrat.... I know you understand this but i do enjoy the banter... 👍

If I understand this correctly the word Democrat can no longer be used in any way shape or form except for the donkey party

And any past references to it that were used correctly should be abolished because the Republicans don't like it anymore

So... we have to dumb down our monuments, created 100 years ago, to ensure they aren't misinterpreted by people who are too stupid to understand history, on the off-chance that it will cause the republican party to lose some credit for actions taken 150 years ago....

am I getting this clearly?

I think the Washington Monument should be torn down and rebuilt to be 6 inches just to be more accurate

To answer the question, it depends on the politician. If it's someone I'd never heard of, I'd assume it meant Democratic party. If it's someone I knew was in the Republican, I'd assume it meant "advocate of democracy". If it was someone I'd heard of, but wasn't sure what party he/she was in, I'd look it up. We live in an age where you can get that information on a funny device in your pocket within 5 seconds.

... yeah, a second plaque explaining to people that they may be too stupid to know it, but "democrat" has two meanings, one of which is "advocate of democracy", and that this is the meaning applied to lincoln in plaque #1.... that sure isn't going to vandalize it at all.

Admit it drafter, this entire bit of stupidity was started by an individual who was too stupid to realize there were two meanings of "democrat" who decided to have a hissy fit. A bunch of other people without the level of vocabulary required to function in society heard about this and elevated it to "NATIONAL NEWS!!!!"... about 100 years too late. While I'm sure there are people who vote democrat who also are too stupid to realize that democrat has two meanings, this is NOT sufficient reason to start a hissy fit.

If someone says you're cute as the dickens does it really mean Charles Dickens or does it mean something else

Think all words with dual meaning should be outlawed

Now I'm just angry

To bring this into context...

What about literature?

I'm sure there are a number of famous political letters and books, required reading in many schools, which use the word "democrat", or "gay" or even "f$g" with definitions outside of the current mainstream usage. Do we need to change all of them?
