Great conversation guys.....but I think you're missing the boat here.

Pardoning death row convicts isn't popular.

not to mention, it is baffling to me that the vast majority of less-government conservatives are so into granting the state the absolute power: the power to execute a human being! To me, that is the ultimate in biggest government imaginable. I fear it.

I understand and agree emotionally when the desire to kill/torture/severely punish rises up within upon learning of yet another sickeningly violent crime. But I can not be part of an equally final act, I can not act on impulse the way murderers do, I can not allow anger and testosterone to make decisions. Nor do I want a government with that power over it's own citizens.

I don't want them to be "rehabbed" and released. I simply do not want to have a hand in a murder and I am part of the state.

I am not against releasing if new evidence (eg DNA) is compelling, however.

After being a major proponent of the death penalty most of my life, I've begun to waiver due to advances in DNA identification & surveillance (thank you Patriot Act) which have vindicated some of the accused.

Having said that, I think that muslims may be onto something however, when they allow the victim's family to select the retribution, be it monetary, death, or act such as mutilation in a like manner as was perpetrated on victim.

Frank.....you're thinking inside the context of the deviated thread jack.......

Gov't officials trying to remove the death penalty for treason. Let it sink in.

As drug makers make it more difficult for the justice system to acquire the drugs needed for the death penalty, it becomes easier for them to just abolish the death penalty.

Ever see the movie Citizen X about Russia's worst serial killer???
9mm to the back of the head. Empty casing sent to the family with an invoice for the round and burial.

Ironic the article was written by Benjamin Franklin?!?!

I tell people about that movie all the time and how good it was. It was made by HBO as one of their monthly original movies. For those that don't know it's about Andrei Chikatilo one of Russia's worst serial killers. It is worth searching out to watch.

Ah yes, upon rereading I see I allowed the current to carry me to a river of personal passion early on. Thanks for putting me back on the intent of your op.

Removing the death penalty for treason...setting things up for an apres office-holding future that includes an inevitable power swing?
That's why I'd do it, if I was at all concerned that my tenure could be construed as treasonous once my term ended.

Frank yes, but this isn't being done by the executive branch. This is why it interests my mind.

If you take an oath to protect from all enemies foreign and domestic and uphold the Constitution. What is it when you cover for someone else that does?

Also treason, through complicity?

Others in history have claimed to have been just following orders. It's no more forgivable when it's one's preferred ruling party.

The homicide rate in death penalty states is higher than that of non-death penalty states. The argument that capital punishment is a deterrent is simply inaccurate.

borndead1 wrote:

I do not doubt what your saying, however that IS only because even states who have it ( death penalty) on their books choose TOO often not to implement it. Seems to me with DNA testing now providing irrefutable proof of guilt, it should make it easier for states to follow through. I see NO reason why any state and or their tax payers should house them for life....Period

As far as death for treasonous acts, why bother? Treasonous to whom? Individual countries or the State? National sovereignty is quickly becoming outdated. Aside from our military grunts which are controlled mostly by upper rank political brown-nosers who secretly laugh at their jingoistic minions, we are racing towards a one world government controlled by the UN, Brussels, & Geneva (WTO).

Forget about the death penalty for treason. The State can always use able bodied traitors for hard labor that even Mexicans won't do. Besides, once they pay their dues, they can answer their true calling & go into politics.

I think it's possible this could pave the way for unpopular presidential pardons and I am ponderingif this may be cover IF something crazy like a coup or revolt took place. That is absolute WILD speculation......but I think about stuff like that.

Not because I believe something will happen just possibilities.
