I had gator once at this 4 star steak place in Orlando maybe 10 years ago and it was amazing. I wish I knew of a place here in Philly that served it. It was so tender and tasty and extremely lean. Normally I don't like any meat that has almost zero fat because that's where the flavor is but I gotta say I would eat gator every week if I could get it.

I've had it a few times in different parts of the country.
Can't say that the word "tender" has ever been used to describe it.
What was the name of the Orlando place? I'd like to try it.

I really wish I could remember. It was a really nice place on the strip where all the theme restaurants are like King Henry's Feast etc. But it wasn't a franchise place. It advertised itself as a Steak house and it was amazing. The owner served us and he recommended that I try the gator as an appetizer. It was like butter. Not even a tiny bit chewy like I was expecting. But since it wasn't like a franchise place I can't remember what it was called. Also we're talking at least 10 years ago. Maybe I just got really lucky and had a chef who's used to cooking gator.

All I know is I would go back in a heartbeat if I knew what it was called. I do remember it was on the opposite side of the street and up a block or two from King Henry's Feast.

From the few pics I can see that might be it. My friend got the Prime Rib and I got a Fillet and both were amazing. I remember walking in and sitting in some really nice booths off to the right along the wall when you walk in. I remember that there was a lot of polished dark wood all over the place.

Update:

al.com - AUTAUGAVILLE, Alabama -- "Ken Owens has skinned and mounted an untold number of wild animals at his Autaugaville taxidermy shop. This week, he put his knife to what is believed to be a world-record alligator killed on the Alabama River during this year's state gator hunt.

Owens said that when he cut open the gator's stomach, he saw a pair of ears. He pulled on them, and out came the carcass of a fully intact, yet deteriorated, adult female deer.

The gator had caught it and gulped it down whole.

Owens used the doe's lower jawbone to age it at about 3 years old. An average mature doe from Wilcox County will weigh in the neighborhood of 115 pounds.

The doe was one of the last meals consumed by the 15-foot, 1,011.5-pound alligator killed by Mandy Stokes and her crew on Saturday, Aug. 16. The huge gator is being preserved by Owens and ultimately will be put on public display.

Owens said all of the deer's hair was gone and some of the meat, though much of the cartilage and the hooves were still intact.

Owens also found a collection of bones from some sort of water bird such as a duck, skull plates from other deer unlucky enough to have crossed the reptile's path, good-size rocks, teeth and an unexpected amount of greenery.

A couple of the molars most likely once resided in the mouth of a small cow.

Vliet said there are many instances in scientific literature that describe larger alligators taking small cows and calves."

AL.com - AUTAUGAVILLE, Alabama - "Alabama is officially the new home of the world record American alligator.

The huge animal killed by Mandy Stokes and her crew from Thomaston earned world record status Friday morning after a pair of master measurers from Safari Club International put a tape to its skin and head and came up with a total of 15 feet, 9 inches.

That's 13 inches longer than the current SCI world record 14-foot, 8-inch gator killed by Thomas Bass of Trinity, Texas. Even though Bass killed his alligator in 2007, it has only held SCI's top spot since June.

The detached head measured 32 inches and the skin stretched the tape to 157.125 for a total of 189.125 inches. Since SCI only measures to the closest half inch, the Stokes Gator's official world record length measurement was rounded down."

I saw this on the news a few months back. The size of this gator is enormous!

My question is, how the hell did they catch it? Did they shoot it? 1,011 pounds is a lot of meat!
