it is usually for very important reasons.

During the El Cajon Blvd. Riot of 1960, white hot rodders battled with police over the closure of a popular but unauthorized drag strip at an unused Navy airport.

The Huntington Beach Riot in 1986 started at a OP Surfing event, attended by nearly 100,000 people, when some girls flashed some boobs and some azz, and the surfer dudes went crazy trying to get some free feels. PD tried to stop, but had to retreat until reinforcements arrived.. Lifeguard Station looted and burned, local businesses looted, several police vehicles overturned and burned.

Michigan State University riots MSU has been the scene of several civil disturbances:
1998 - protestors rioted when the university banned alcohol at tailgate parties
1999 - riots occurred after a loss to Duke in the Final Four
2005 - loss to UNC in Final Four
2013 - A victory over Ohio State!!!!!

Ol Miss Riots of 1962 started when the university admitted the first black student in it's history.

Kent State Massacre of 1970...now I remember...4 kids killed and 9 others wounded by the National Guard. Vietnam era anti-war protests were happening all over the country with mostly white protestors. A big riot happened in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention in '68. I was at UCLA during one of the protests in '72.

Police were lined up three deep across the quad, slowly advancing to clear the area of students demonstrating against the war. Bill Walton was among the demonstrators. A girl was walking her dog on the perimeter and tried to go around the line but police hit her with their batons and put her on the ground. That's when someone on the second floor in Royce Hall, the adjacent building, opened a window and sprayed the cops with a fire hose. People in the crowd started throwing stuff at the police, and then they charged. I was near the front, which became the back, closest to the cops, so when the crowd hit a bottleneck at the top of Jannss Steps, there I was, with nowhere to go. Cops got to me and hit me numerous times with their batons, bruising my elbow, back and thighs. Luckily I had on a backpack filled with books. That absorbed a few blows until it got knocked off. Then I got shoved down the stairs, falling on a bunch of people. Mob mentality incites both protestors and the police.

Of course you didn't. You would of had to steal a 500lb console tv back then, now you can carry a big screen in each hand.

Yep.

And Halloween. Rioting would start at bar time when people weren't allowed to drink any longer.
Liquor store windows would get smashed... police would bust out the tear gas etc etc etc.

They have that night locked down now.

Yeah, buddy of mine picked a fight with someone after bar close on Halloween. Not a pretty sight, turns out the dude was an amateur boxer.

Damn shame Halloween ended up going that route, but I suppose it was inevitable. In the early '80's it was the most incredible street party and I don't recall ever seeing a fight or anything that I thought was out of control. The parts that I remember were some of the most fun I had in college.

They shut it down by 2004. Close off the entire street, you have to buy tickets to get onto state street, they limit the number of tickets to a very small amount (I think 25-50k). Mounted cops everywhere and a full sweep of the street to clear it afterwards. It's a different scene now.
