Times are changing is an understatement. Back in the old days, before the term "school resource officer" was coined one could walk out into the student parking lot of my high school and find more pickup trucks with firearms in gun racks than without. Many of us went hunting either before school or afterwards or both.

Fast forward to today. School property and buffer zones around them are considered weapon free areas. In many jurisdictions, the act of having a folding pocket knife in these zones will result in an arrest. Get caught with a firearm in one and you're looking at a 10 year minimum.

Nowadays it's not uncommon to have drug-sniffing dogs brought on campus to sniff lockers and automobiles.

Did I mention that I'm an SRO on my off duty days? SMH.....

It gets'm prepared for prison. 😰 IMO, it's great to have an officer in school, some students are quite capable of violent acts a teacher is not trained to handle. OTOH, metal detectors, searches and drug dogs are a lot like prison, even if it is, "For the children."

I'll never forget working at a nuclear plant construction site when the site protective forces did a drug dog sweep in our offices. It was quite intimidating, especially since we had taken over the office and everything inside from another contractor. I sure my face had the same stunned look as my entire group when the dog reacted to the desk of one fellow. Turned out to be an old jar of rubber cement that had xylene, similar to model cement people huff that crap. Tok about ten years off that guy. 😂

Yes, inside of an old glass jar with a screw on metal cap that had been there for years sealed with old glue.

Years later on another site run by the DOE they did the same thing. The dog went after chicken bones a guy had thrown into his trash can. The K9 handler was pissed when the guy said, "he's a heckuva a chicken dog." We had a good laugh that time.

It's a double edged sword Gene. On the one hand, it's nice in that someone is there or in the general area if something bad happens. It makes it harder for the bad guys.

On the other hand all too often faculty want the SRO's to act like bouncers. They want the SRO to "come scare this kid". Or they kick off chit with a student then want the SRO to arrest the kid for cursing at them. I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

Few realize it, but it's probably one of the more difficult LEO jobs. The trick is to find balance if you can. I've found that many times a cool head can calm most situations with the students. Sometimes though that's easier said than done.

I once was stationed at a middle school where the assistant principal had his "rat pack" as I called them. He would give the kids school money that could be redeemed for refreshments at sports events in exchange for them ratting out other students. One day be called me into his office and told me to arrest a girl. I asked him why and he gave me the expulsion referral. It was for fighting. As it turns out the "victim" was a member of his rat pack and she had actually started the fight by swinging first. It just so happened that the mother of the child whom he wanted me to arrest was in the office and was quite upset. The principal walked by and told the mother that if she opened her mouth one time she was going to have me arrest her. I told the mother that I would be the one to decide who to arrest and that at the moment I was leaning more towards arresting the child who hard started the fight and not her or her child. The principal turned red and walked off more pissed off than I had seen anyone in a long time.

A few minutes later my Capt. called me and asked me what happened. I told him and he said he would back me up. Apparently the principal when into her office and called her supervisor who called mine. About 30 minutes later my Capt. reassigned to another school. Though she wanted one, that school never got another SRO assigned to the school until 2 years later when she was retired.

I feel for you Abrignac, My Mother was a retired teacher. She often said if she was still teaching she'd be in jail.

When the parents expect the school to raise as well as educate their little monsters nothing but trouble ensues. Unfortunately, parents are addicted to the material life and sacrifice raising their children for making a buck. I'm not talking about single parents, but coupes that think more about financing toys than raising their children. As bad as it is for the teachers it must be much worse for you.
