Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Missouri, and Michigan in less than a week. What is happening to our country? Prayers and positive thoughts for those officers in particular and all officers in general. My sadness is great.

Breakdown of the family?

I'm not smart enough to know what the problem is... But breakdown of the family is just silly.

Victor, I have no idea what is causing this, though I do feel it is a very complex problem with many pieces to it. You are much better than I at finding legitimate studies. Can you find any on this problem?

Drafter, I don't know how anyone could not feel terrible about this. I also feel terrible when another black man dies. Even when it is a justified shooting, it is terrible that a life is lost. A police officer has a split second to make a life and death descision. What a horrific burden.

Here in Dallas, a man shot 12 cops, killing 5. It's a new kind of tragedy.

Since we all know that the easy availability of firepower had nothing to do with the crime, I would like to point out that when the shooting started there were 20 Open Carry people in the crowd with rifles slung over their shoulders - who ran. Just sayin'.

And in further tragic irony, the shooter was "supported" by the second amendment, in that he was fighting a government he disagreed with.....

Speyside... My first question would be whether we're seeing a problem or not.

We need to address whether we're seeing an increase in anything, or just an increased visibility of what has been around.

I'm reminded of something a black coworker of mine told me a year or two ago.... It isn't like anything new was happening to blacks with cops. It's just that they now have cell phones with video and news stations willing to listen to them. Do we know that we're seeing any increased violence against cops either? Is anything actually happening to our country or do we just.... Feel like it is...? People are very susceptible to misjudging this sort of thing.

Most of the people I know that carry do so for self defense, not to be a hero in a crowd. So if you have the option to get out instead of shooting someone, that is the preferred scenario of the people I know.

Oh, this was just a hollow and pointless stab at the vaunted Second Amendment.

As though people with rifle slung in down town Dallas would be and organized militia. No - they just sling them to show their swinging cod. From what I've see in Dallas the Open Carry crowd that marches is just a bunch of punks....

I've been in the mountains with NO TV...

But I've heard radio reports and read a few of your posts...

Having "A PROTEST" where the protesters
OPENLY CARRY FIREARMS IS:
A) a cop's WORST nightmare IMAGINABLE.
B) a travesty of justice and mockery of ANY open CARRY law
C) a prescription for 100% guaranteed VIOLENCE
and deaths...
D) ALL OF THE ABOVE

It reminds me of the CBS NIGHTLY NEWS IN the late 1960's And early 70's...
When " THE BLACK PANTHERS" would have a PROTEST or NEWS conference...
It was always SURREAL...Raising their FISTS with one arm while raising their firearm with the other arm...
And they always had AMMO BANDELIERS OVER their shoulders...with the BLACK berets and
BLACK SUNGLASSES...
those ****-ers were BAD-AZZ...

B. Mockery? Are you suggesting open carry should be limited for gatherings or protests? I'm ok with that but many in here will not be, at least if they agree with the protesters. We do have selective minds in here (including mine) that try really hard to pretend they are not. Aren't guns allowed at the RNC convention? That's a gathering.

The fact that anyone could carry a long gun anywhere made it somewhat normal. The shooter could just walk around barely noticed until ready to fire. I'm po gun, but personally I prefer concealed to open carry. Nothing really political in my view, I just prefer not to advertise.

While being pro gun I do think the NRA is digging its own grave. Something about their approach reminds me of the pro smoking folks in the 80s. They have the upper hand for the moment, over play it at times, are about to get cornered, and the anti gun nazis will win. I hope I'm wrong.

True....however they were there to PROTEST LE treatment ( in other states ) that had ZERO to do with anything happening in theirs. It's a shame thatthe message is lost when they allow it to be about nothing other than skin color. Did you really think those in that crowd were going to come to the aide of the LEO's???? lolz
Think Black Panthers @ our election boothes in Philly in 08...if that incident had been a bunch of White dudes toting guns and intimidating others....they'd have been arrested and RIGHTFULLY SO, but since they shared skin pigment with our POTUS....it just kinda " went away " didn't it? Never to be heard about again....

And.... if what you said is true.....why wasn't he trying to kill those responsible for MAKING LAW....not the ones tasked with carrying them out???? #-o

Ummm if the officers were getting shot, that means the protesters (with or without the guns) were also down range of the shooter. Are you suggesting they had some psychic connection and knew the shooter was just targeting the Leo's? Cut that's silly.
