Paid in 3% less overall for the year and saw a 20% increase on the fed return... That's what I base most my opinion on...

fair enough...my son didn't do so well...they did not get as many tax credits/write-offs as in past years due to the Trump tax cut rules and the rate drop wasn't enough to compensate for the lost deductions/credits...big one was not getting credit for state and local taxes...

we have our tax appt. in a couple of weeks...looms like a dental appt on the calendar...

2 things... One is that a tax return isn't an indication of much... What matters is what percentage you paid over the whole year... Its very possible that your son and his family paid less this year than they have in many years, but if they didn't heed the irs warning to adjust their withholding, their return would've shrunk from previous years...

Second, I won't make any assumptions about your sons situation, but any household making upwards of $90-$100k per year should definitely expect to shoulder more than they have previously... It's what the dems have always claimed they wanted but never actually done...

that wasn't how Trump sold his tax-cut, though...he called it his "Middle Class Tax Cut"

Hey Opel.... Not sure what you mean by "tax return won't indicate much"...

Unless Delta's isn't bright enough to know the difference between total taxes and how much you owe after withholding.... I think he's smart enough to know the difference...

If a politician is selling, don't buy...

And let's definitely not complain about the rich paying more than the poor... People with kids saw their income tax credit doubled... And those are the people more likely to be struggling financially and more likely to pump that money back into the economy...

I've heard lots of people who I consider to be smart complain that they didn't see as big a refund check without realizing that, since they paid in a lower percentage overall for the year, the normal amount they would've seen in one check at the end of the year was instead dispersed into their weekly paychecks throughout the year, and that total amount they saw in their weekly paychecks is likely greater than they've seen on that one big check in years past...

Huh.... So you're telling me that people you considered smart didn't understand the concept of withholding??? 🙂

victor809 wrote:

Yes... But not so much that they don't understand as they have it so ingrained in their minds that the size of their tax return is the barometer of the economy... If you can explain to someone that that isn't the case and they understand, I would qualify them as at least a little smart... And most people would understand if they bothered to try instead of blaming the shambles of their lives on the president...

I wouldn't expect people who's lives are shambles to be able to understand a ton....

But I have less faith in people than you do.

the new tax changes took place well into the year. As soon as I saw an increased direct deposit, I increased my 401k contribution, not my withholding.

but this will expire...for the middle class anyway.

in my son's case, despite the tax rate for his income level dropping, his net tax payment (total dollars and percentage) was higher because several deductions and credits he qualified for and used in the past were eliminated, which exceeded the amount saved from the 3% tax rate drop...not by a lot, but the tax cut did not help him...

so we apply what the politician says and does to our personal lives, and you came out better...and that's why you're judging Trump a success...OK...

I'm not optimistic that I'll be a beneficiary of the Trump middle class tax cut, though...unless it is large enough to actually make a real difference in my life...we have a tax appt. later this week...

It just swells my heart though, the the richest among us who were in dire straits were the real beneficiaries...and all the benefits that Trump said would result did not pan out...

Certain itemized deductions were eliminated.

We need a %5 flat tax one time, and mandatory balanced budgets & eiminate CRs.

by appointing the billionaire class and their minions to high levels of government, Trump may have done his most effective work for the wealthy class and big business in America...businesses that were experiencing record profits before he came to office...at the expense of the consumer, the average American...he falsely said that he would work on behalf of the people, but we aint them...

Trump's roll-back of regulations on businesses have increased our exposure to polluted water, air and soil...unhealthy conditions that we, the people will ultimately pay to correct

his anti-scientist policies and cuts of fed funds have paused important research work by government scientists in the EPA, FDA, Energy, NIH and other fed agencies that is intended to provide insights to enhance the health and lives of all Americans...

and his leadership style has intensified the divisions that already existed among us...

some of us who formerly demanded public officials to exhibit ethical behavior and positive character; who once marveled at how Reagan showed great respect for the office because he insisted on keeping his suit coat and tie on while in the Oval Office...now are OK with a conman, a cheat, a fraud, an admitted sexual assaulter, a pathological liar...

but it's fine to have a POTUS like Trump, who is all of those, because arguably he may or may not be a racist...

Trump is the ass hole who shows up to the black tie event wearing the tuxedo t shirt and ruins all the delusional girls fantasies about how wonderful and important they are...
