^^MMhhhhmmmm. If you just listen to the Doctor (and economist) speaking from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, this is what I've been talking about. He's been on the news and in some videos explaining this.

I watched that whole video. I recommend watching it start to finish, Spey... then you might see my point of view.

Funny thing is..............well, not funny at all actually, is when this video was made, we were at like 500 deaths, and these guys are hammering the panic mode.
Now at 20,000+
I’ll defer to DanMD.................it ain’t da flu.

On the other hand, chit, I may have had it already back in Dec/ Jan when I was sick as fuq and couldn’t get better, and whined about it here like a lil bitch......Opie as well if I recall correctly.
Be interesting to see if that theory about it being on the left coast quite a it earlier than previously thought pans out.

It turns out that this hypothesis has been promoted by the Rush Limbaugh show. It’s all about trying to avoid giving due credit to the Democratic leaders in California for successfully managing the crisis. Limbaugh had a guy named Victor Davis Hanson on his show last week. Victor Davis Hanson is a military historian and fellow at the Hoover Institution, a right-wing thinktank located at Stanford University. He is also a great admirer of Rush Limbaugh and Donald Trump and has a history of expressing the sorts of views you would expect from someone like that. This guy has no sort of expertise relating to public health.

After Limbaugh’s show, a reporter from a TV station in Salinas, California put together a news story based on it. She talks about a study being conducted by researchers at Stanford Medicine to test to people in California for antibodies to the virus. She quotes from this Hanson guy extensively and creates the impression that he is involved in the study. She also states that the study will look at whether the virus has been circulating in California since the fall. That’s not what the study is looking at. There is NO SCIENTIST that thinks this might be true.

The story was reprinted by SF Gate, which is associated with the San Francisco Chronicle. This creates the impression that it's coming from a reputable source. (Both SF Gate and the Salinas TV station are owned by Hearst Communications.) On a subsequent show, Limbaugh cited the San Francisco Chronicle as the source to validate his own theory.

In the meantime, more and more people are sharing this article, and the idea is taking hold in people’s minds.

SF Gate has now removed the article. You can still read the original on KSBW's website.

Unfortunately, versions of this story keep popping up. Several ABC affiliates in California have run it, with Hanson as their source. Fighting this is a game a whack-a-mole!

Here is a timeline with sources:

March 31 - Victor Davis Hanson publishes an article in the National Review proposing the idea of herd immunity in California, and Rush Limbaugh discusses it on his show.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/03/coronavirus-pandemic-california-herd-immunity/

April 2 - Hanson goes on Fox to discuss his idea.
https://video.foxnews.com/v/6146745552001#sp=show-clips

April 3 - Limbaugh discusses Hanson's idea, playing lengthy clips from Hanson's appearance on Fox.
https://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2020/04/03/victor-davis-hanson-on-coronavirus-and-california/

April 8 - KSBW runs a story on Hanson's idea and erroneously ties it to the study on the presence of antibodies by Stanford Medicine. SF Gate runs the KSBW story.
https://www.ksbw.com/article/new-study-investigates-californias-possible-herd-immunity-to-covid-19/32073873

April 9 - Limbaugh again discusses Hanson's idea, this time citing the SF Chronicle as his source. He wrongly states that Stanford Medicine is researching the idea. SF Gate takes down the story, and several ABC affiliates in California run their version of the story, which is virtually the same as the KSBW story.

At least two news sources have now debunked the story:

Some people (OANN's Liz Wheeler) have been saying this for a few weeks.

But it's OANN. She must be wrong... right? :-"

Two things stand out to me.

This virus is REALLY good at being infectious. And it's serious enough that at least 10% of the people who get it would require some level of hospitalization (If we're looking at close to 20% of people having permanent lung scarring from this, odds they're going to the hospital). Based on that it seems really unlikely that this virus was running around in December or earlier, just being extra sneaky and only making people a little sick, but not that bad. I do think there's a chance it came a little earlier than the first US case... just because there's a lot of travel between US and China, and Wuhan locked down a little late. But a month earlier? Nah. What do we think the virus was doing all that time?

Using Herd Immunity to open up early is stupid and requires having zero understanding of the scale of our population. We have just over 500,000 confirmed cases in the US. That's 0.16% of our population .... and they haven't even all recovered from the disease. And they're spread out all over the country. What's the plan? Have them all move to North Dakota and run one WalMart? Herd Immunity as a general concept is great. We are nowhere near it right now.

As for rush...who I used to listen to every day until the formula grew old I had to laugh at what I read joe Scarborough said. I liked Scarborough at a deficit hawk republican in Congress then he went to MSNBC, married an ultra lib and kisses her ass. Can’t watch him. But when he’s right he’s right.

If rush is so sure of the propaganda he pushes he should volunteer to bag groceries for awhile.

Victor the other problem with opening up early is it nullifies what we have accomplished. The flip flop decision making would have us experience what was once mitigated AND the cost of mitigation in the first place. We get the worst of both models!

If we wanted to just calculate and monetize the cost of lives and accept it, we should have done it up front. And it would have cost us more than mitigation. But this way we get the double dip. Yea!

But I have to say this. It’s been the local government’s that have slowed this thing. When trump talks about opening things up I’m not sure what he’s talking about other than suggestion. Which is nothing but politics. Trump is a pure politician.

Did you hear about California's super early, super bad flu season that experts are still scratching their head over? Around day 8 or 9 for my father in law he came down with pneumonia and we thought we were going to lose him... Had to be put on a vent... My lungs still haven't recovered from what I had... Daily inhaler user now...

Also, they already know it was in California as early as December... They're theorizing it may have been earlier, but December I believe has already been established...

TW... I think I told you over text before.... I don't see a good exit strategy for this, personally. Whatever they choose to do, they're going to want to do it too early... That will start the infections again. We're not going to have herd immunity until we get some insane number of infections (I'm assuming we need at least 10% of the population to have antibodies before we no longer have to worry about the disease spreading quickly between groups... I'm just spitballing on that, I'm sure epidemiologists have an accurate number)... We can't keep going like this for too long...

The only thing we can hope to do is improve our cultural habits regarding washing, coughing, wearing masks... etc.

This has killed some kids. If two entire schools worth of kids had it (what is that, like 400?) you'd think at least one would die. Or a teacher at least. Just ONE mysterious death in that huge group of people might make me think there's a chance.

Look at NYC... they're burying people in a potters field. If it ran rampant through a school, then it would have gone back to every family, and every parent's workplace. There would have been some blip on the radar.
