we also tend to forget that we are asking police to do much more than pure law enforcement...

they have been assigned to address widespread and rampant societal ills: poverty leading to petty theft; homelessness where it exists, manage mental health cases in crisis mode. serve as marriage and family counselors, support education by rounding up truants, manage and control drug and alcohol abuse...all this with only the tools and training they've been provided..... apprehend, arrest, incarcerate...because of this, our police departments are viewed more as a heavy handed occupying army...us vs them perspectives on both sides become ingrained...

Some funding for police would be better utilized by investing in real solutions to some societal ills...this may reduce the amount of money we spend on police and jails/prisons...

I'm curious where you got these "simple facts."
Sounds more like some made up chit than true facts. Any way.

I feel that we shouldn't reduce police funding. I think that the problem lies with the police unions and the "shield" they put up around bad police. It's like tenured professors. Except that professors generally aren't trained to use fire arms. No doubt that being a police officer is a tough thankless job. I know that the majority of police officers hate the "bad ones" more than anyone. Certainly there's no simple bumper sticker solution to this problem. 🌫

defunding basically means 'level the playing field'... that way rioters can charge the police line without fear of rubber bullets or tear gas and maybe even get caught on camera getting pushed to the ground.... 😟

I'm all for eliminating police in blue cities. Then we can put up walls around them like in that "Escape from NY" movie.

Robert, if the reporting on what is included in most police union contracts is accurate, I question the constitutionally of them. I do not pretend to be an expert in any way. I believe that the contracts hide or even remove potentially criminal acts by police officers. But again, just my opinion, and not one with any expertise.

Of, to answer your question, neither. My verbiage was poor. I want what I perceive as illegal protection due to contractual obligations to be challenged.

You even added joggers to "c)" but I think that more vigilantism than policing and not what the author was talking about. OTOH, you could consider that the old police pulling someone over and telling them they are in the wrong neighborhood.

It sure would be nice to be able to pull over someone texting while driving and smash their cell phone and take a hammer to their car without any repercussions from the police. It might just cut down on texting while driving.
