Considering the fact that a number of states have effectively nullified unconstitutional federal law by passing medical and/or recreational marijuana laws, the writing was on the wall that the feds were losing their authoritarian grip.

Jefferson and Madison's Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions were called the Principles of '98, state interposition a.k.a. nullification has been the rightful remedy for stopping unconstitutional federal laws, to render them null and void.
If the 3 branches of the federal government are the final arbiters of their their own powers, and the parties to the constitutional compact (the states) have no say in judging those powers then that's where federal tyranny grows.
It doesn't matter if it's weed, guns or anything else.
