I have a daniel marshall humidor that fits about 80 cigars. The humidor is about 5 years old. A few months ago the humidifer started to smell like a orange type of smell. I've used special care solution about every 6 months. However it still gives of a awkward smell. It's starting to effect my cigars. It's not a mold or mildew smell. Anyway I'm ready to throw out the humidifer. Are their any recomendations on some of the best humidifers out their. Someone told me westerns are the best because you don't have to use special care solution.

If you can take the one you have apart,just replace the humidifiing element with florists foam.Rick will be along in a moment to tell you how to make one.I'd do it but he really gets off on it.One of lifes little pleasures...LOL :0)

If you'd prefer, I'll tell you about soap-dish humidifiers ... I've made several and find them superior to anything I've bought at any price ... of course, I've never spent more than $60 for a humidifier, so maybe I'm missing out on something ... the most recent 3 soap dish units cost me $11 (at MOST) and I've got florist foam left over that'd make another half-dozen... and frankly, I'm more than happy to be able to spend the money saved on cigars, but you are entitled to spend YOUR money as you see fit ...

The advantage of the soap dish humidifier is that it ISN'T the same size ... it's bigger ... and because it's bigger, it will hold more distilled water or 50/50 mix ... because it has a higher capacity, it requires less maintenance AND gives you some assurance that it will hold the desired 70 humidity level more readily ...

As a point of clear fact, the purpose of PG (the other 50 besides the distilled water in a 50/50 mix) is to serve as a sort of pacemaker for the rate at which the water half evaporates ...

I know ... you're thinking "well, this unit came with the humidor, so it must be the one the humidor is supposed to have to work right" ... actually (e-Chick says I say actually a lot ... do I?), the humidfier that came with your humidor was either cheap or decorative for them to include, but not necessarily one that will provide optimum function ... I'll grant you, it LOOKS good, sorta like the analog hygrometer, but for serious functionality, bag that humidifier and go with a soap dish ...

I can see it now, E-Chick will become E-Chic inc. when she begins marketing her sweater box/humidor combos for the fairer sex.

PG = Propylene Glycol,you can get it at your local pharmacy at the counter or you can order some from c-bid or try the chemistrystore dot com for the best price on a lifetime supply...LOL

All the previous suggestions are good. If you are looking for someting simple that will take up very little space and last a long time, get a Diamond Crown. Uses distilled water only, very slim, holds at 70%. Works best with a wall mount. For a lid mount, I like the Paradigm humidifier for all the same reasons.
