I have some Cuban neighbors and met another fine Cuban gentleman yesterday. I have asked both of them about the term "ISOM" and they both replied the same. They both consider it disrespectful and told me that the name of the island and country is "Cuba".

Nothing wrong with saying "Cuba" or "Cuban" and the Cubans seem to prefer it that way.

Using the acronym ISOM is just a standard American way of poking fun at a law that is being ignored (by some people that don't hang around this board.. I'm sure). There is no disrespect to Cuba or Cubans in using this term. To the contrary, in the true American fashion, they are being honored by having an alternate term that is used to talk about a much sought after item, while not DIRECTLY stating that they might be doing something illegal.

If anyone is from THAT country and living in THIS country, then they really should feel proud that ISOM is used as it is. If any ARE uptight about it, give them an ISOM cigar and tell them to relax.

... and JustDanD is correct. The term ISOM does NOT refer to the country itself, just a 'term of endearment' of the cigar ... kind of a 'cutsey' cult way of refering to the Cuban cigar, for that those that use it, pseudo-hiding something that is considered illegal ...

Whether of not the acronym ISOM is disrespectful is up to your indivudual point of view. I asked them an honest question and they gave me their honest opinions. I would consider it disrespectful on my part to be offensive and rude to reply to them as you suggest. Besides all that, why would I want to be so impolite to nice people bearing gifts of the forbidden fruit?
