Shovel, yeah, this part of US not get settled until '49er' gold rush, so we are pretty 'new' here.
Curious history tidbit: While Spain controlled/owned this vast part of North America, they were (understandably) having trouble getting it settled. No Spanish grandee worth his salt wanted to surrender the high-society of Seville for the barren, culture-less wasteland of the New World. But Spain also had a problem: 100s & 100s of Second and Third sons--sons who were not in line to 'inherit' (first sons got that). What to do with all these sons of good family, but nothing to do but promenade and spend family $? So, the Spanish Crown was persuaded to make massive, massive land grants in New World, and these grants were given to the aimless wastrels of nobility--problem was, they had to give up Spain, come here and MAKE IT PAY! LOL!
Many of the counties we know today, at least in California, were once Spanish Land Grants. Ventura County, North of Los Angeles comes to mind. It once belonged to Desi Arnez's mother's family. Worthless when given, but it included most of what we know today a Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Hollywood, Worth heap unconcievable billions of wampum today.
