there are lots of analogies to the principal of a person thinking, behaving and being one way and then being freed from sin, choosing to devote themselves to God and accept the punishment that Jesus paid for his/her sins. One way is to think of it like Satan/sin ensnaring people, keeping them from God and Jesus paid the 'ransom' to set them free
