Bush Strikes Back: Stage 1
By ****** Morris
FrontPageMagazine.com | March 10, 2004

It is increasingly clear that President Bush's line of attack against Kerry
will be to describe him as a flip-flopping politician, changing his
positions constantly to suit the political needs of the moment. One negative
ad, previewed on "Meet the Press," showed an animation of two John Kerry
boxers battling one another. The winner? George W. Bush.

The obvious goal of the Bush attack is to discredit Kerry and make it hard
for anyone to believe in him or anything he says. But this round of
flip-flop attacks is just the precursor of the main Bush offensive.
Attacking Kerry for reversing himself on many key issues will weaken the
Democrat, but the real point is to soften him up for two more deadly attacks
likely to follow.

First, the flip-flop ads are designed to make Kerry appear too weak to lead
America through the tough challenges of terrorism at home and abroad.
Attacking a candidate for reversing himself on key political issues is the
best way to make him appear weak, indecisive and vacillating.

When I worked for President Bill Clinton, the Republicans tried the same
tactic, constantly citing his frequent reversals on issues to demonstrate
weakness. Their barbs were very effective and led to a White House policy of
never, never, never reversing a stand on anything.

(Sometimes, White House staff liberals took advantage of this axiom to leak
word that Clinton was about to take a liberal position so as to foreclose
him from doing anything else for fear of it seeming to be a flip-flop.
During the welfare-reform debate, after Clinton had privately decided to
sign a waiver to let Wisconsin move ahead with the work requirements and
time limits its Legislature had adopted, some White House staffers leaked
that he had decided to veto it instead. Terrified of seeming to flip on the
issue, Clinton eventually backed off the Wisconsin proposal but then signed
a national welfare-reform law. )

Bush wants to show that Kerry is too weak to lead the nation as a wartime
president. It is no accident that Bush is opening his paid media campaign by
reminding voters of his strong stance in the months after 9/11. He wants to
raise the saliency of terrorism as an issue and to up the ante for the
strength required of a chief executive. The flip-flop ads are his way of
doing it.

By showing the Democrat as a man who can be pushed first one way and then
the other by political winds, he shows him to be far from the strong,
decisive leader America needs.

The flip-flop attack is also designed to prevent Kerry from responding to
the other key line of Bush attack - that Kerry is too liberal for mainstream
America.

By criticizing Kerry for changing his position constantly, the Bush campaign
hopes to stop their opponent from wriggling out of his previous liberal
votes and views. Once the public is alert to the chance that Kerry will
change his mind, it becomes harder for the Democrat to explain away his
votes and to move to the center under Bush's fire.

Now, when Bush moves in for the kill and accuses Kerry of opposing the
Defense of Marriage Act or appropriations to fund the Iraq War, the
Democratic candidate will find it harder to spin his positions and to move
to the middle on these issues. When he tries, voters will repeat to
themselves the Ronald Reagan criticism of Jimmy Carter: "There you go
again."

By showing Kerry to flip-flop, Bush sets him up for the real charges - that
he is too weak and too liberal to be president.

Conventional wisdom says that this election is going to be close, a replay
of 2000. It need not be so. If Bush runs aggressive national advertisements,
hammering at these themes, he can put this race away by the end of the
spring.

We must remember that Bush's father trailed Mike Dukakis by 17 points in the
months before the conventions. Until Bush Sr. ran negative ads, it seemed
that the Massachusetts governor would be Reagan's successor. Kerry's bubble
may prove to be just that fragile.

It's about time! We had to suffer through the Keystone Cops all bumbling over each other to step up to the microphone and declare that President Bush is a liar, a cheat and crooked only to see the herd thinned. The only credible person that they put up was used like a doormat by his own party. They failed to understand that character does matter.

Kerry's "bubble" is an anger management counseler's nightmare!

First he has a "hero" with a chest full of medals that he himself declared required no medical stay..."walking wounded" and then we see him as Citizen Kerry in front of the house describing himself as an eyewitness to war crimes and atrocities. Remember he was an officer and should've reported his sightings, but NONE were filed!

Second we have a career politician that has a knack for ALWAYS being on the wrong side of EVERY issue he's ever voted on! He hasn't introduced a single bill and his attendence record when he does choose to vote is abysmal. He has the outright gall to declare President Bush AWOL when he was in the ANG, but that's to deflect from his absenteeism in the Senate. You know that cush-cush job that he was elected to? Serve his constituents? Then when he does show up to vote he outpaces himself from Kennedy, Boxer, Billary, and Edwards by voting to the EXTREME left of THEM! That in itself is a microscope into his mind!

Thirdly he wants to repeal the Bush tax cuts. Ladies and gentlemen...I don't care what "class" you're in, but do know that when he states that, that it means TAX INCREASE! They'll try to make it a Rich vs. all the rest issue, but America wasn't built to operate like that. We ALL have rights and making class warfare is an affront to them! Have you ever seen an actual dollar amount that qualifies someone to "be" rich? Where does it stop? Kerry himself is a multi-millionaire and could easily give his salary to a charity, but his donations to charities are yet another reflection into his true character.

Fourth, there's the race card. He's already on the record that he wants to be the 2nd "Black President". I guess Clinton dressed up like Al Jolson in Harlem, because he claims he was the 1st "Black President". That didn't fly with the Black Caucus, which demanded an apology from him because he doesn't understand for one second what it means to be black. They even called him a "rich guy".

And lately we see that he tell anyone whatever they want to hear when he doesn't have a camera in his face. Yet, he cries and bemoans that President Bush is running a "dirty" campaign? Give me a break. Have fun with this guy, because this anchor is going down. The REAL race is about to start and we've already seen how he wants to have a legal staff in Florida for a "pre-emptive" vote recount. Didn't they learn the 1st time?

What positve message does Kerry talk about? He seems to relish in unemployment numbers because he's NEVER created a bill to put up even a band-aid of a soloution. He signed NAFTA, so he's all in favor of shipping jobs overseas. He hasn't introduced anything trying to repeal NAFTA. Yet he has unions behind him. That's actually troubling. How do you think he's going to help them? Then there's the war on terror issue. He voted for the use of force, but yet he doesn't want to fund the troops. Can anyone tell me what that was about? Go fight, but just use your hands, is that what he intends to do with our troops if elected or is he just going to bring them back home to create another power vaccuum? We can't pull out of there until Iraq is stable and he knows it. We can't use the UN in there because they've NEVER done anything right in the regards of nation building. We can't leave this to the French because they'd love to colonize the place like they've tried to in Vietnam and the Ivory Coast.

There is no positive message. There is no plan. All there are is empty campaign speeches designed to tell you what you want to hear. This President has been through 9-11, passed tax cuts, introduced platforms that the Democrats have been promising for DECADES and NEVER delivered(even in 8 years under Clinton!!!!)and provided the nation with a leadership that most of the world didn't want to commit to, but in the events since we can agree that the world IS and will be a safer place without rogue nations sponsering their nefarious actions.

Do I like EVERYTHING he's done...no. I'm against the immigrant amnesty plan. I'm in favor of turning these people over to the Mexican government with a bill for their food/lodging/clothes/healthcare/education and make it so high that the Mexican government will be forced to deal with the problem from THEIR end, instead of using their military to heave people over the border! I'm also against this bloated budget. There's so much useless garbage in that. The common man could eliminate most of it by applying the common sense that God gave us. The role of government is to be some Santa Claus figure that doles out whatever you want for free. It purpose is to defend, maintain infrastructure and uphold/pass the laws.

Whew...pass the aspirin...gimmie a smoke...I'm taking the rest of the day off...WITH PAY!

I've been saying since "JFK" declared his candidacy, that this guy cares me worse than any of the others out there, so who's the leading candidate? This guy MAY not be to the left of Stalin!

Aaaahhhhhhh-- can't you feel the love in the air, Rick?

Kerry & Gore are both cut from the same cloth. Both spent about 4 months in Vietnam--Gore with his man servant/bodyguard, while Kerry was busy chasing down a boy and shooting him in the back. Kerry's connections got him his medals for this and for his paper cuts.

God knows what Dubya was doing. Reading Success magazine in between training flights? He must have missed the articles on how to run a successful business (not enough pictures?).

CW, Kerry's presidency should be more frightening to us than the nincompoop's re-election.

That because Gore licks himself clean. Kerry has a servant do it.

i remember kite season and sending messages up the string.

last week i had about 20 feet of rope and kite string wrapped it around a piece of wood and showed it to toby. i asked her what this bundle of rope reminded her of and she said, that's the way we used to wrap kite string.

another reason to love this lady who has made and continues to make my life worth living.

Safe?

Those filthy "muhammedans" will have something in store for us. Haven't you heard them refer to the "black smoke of death" that they're preparing for America? They may pop that one on us after the elections. By that time we should have allowed enough of those animals to have entered & organized into cells.

In the meantime, Britain will probably be next. They have one of the largest muhammedan populations in Europe.

I hope that my fellow madrilenos pave their temples & send them packing like the Dutch are planning to do.

OH GOD! not this again!first the Bush administration was blasted for not issueing some kind of vague warning based on widely disparate pieces of information that NO ONE had access to all of (remember the reason for the Office of Homeland Defense?, to coordinate such info) Then after several warnings that may have just made the target area too hot for an attack to be carried out, They get accused of "crying wolf". I have become convinced that there is NOTHING that Bush could do, that the left would see a positive light, and it makes me want to PUKE! The same people bent on ousting Bush are the same morally bankrupt cretins who insisted on keeping Slick Willie in office for eight years! They have no concept of right and wrong, they just want their side in power, regardless of the harm it would do the country.
