I'm looking into purchasing a franchise. Just started my search and I was wondering if any of you had any experience doing this. Any you highly recommend? Any to avoid?

Yes, move to Tucson Arizona and open up an In & Out Burger. Also, make sure you open one up next to my house. We dont have one in Tucson and I'm sure you'd make me happy at least.

since you didn't say what kind of franchise, fast food, speed reading, pimp, hard to offer any suggestions.

in general, if you can open the business without being beholden to a franchiser, you would have less help but you would not have someone that owns a piece of you.

HD: I worked with a group that franchised El Pollo Loco restaurants in SoCal and New Mexico. I can tell you the good, the bad, and the ugly about franchise relationships.

Sylance: In & Out Burgers are not franchised. All are company-owned. This bums out a lot of prospective franchisees.

Outback Steakhouses are always packed. Rarely have I ever seen an Outback with less than 1 hr wait for dinner.

In N Out Burgers are not franchised. It is a family owned business. That is one reason why they are so great and another reason why they aren't everywhere. And their fries are great too but thats JMNSFHO.

Rick,

I agree with you about the good and bad of franchises, but I'm keeping my options open. Just started looking so I haven't narrowed down my choices yet. But pimp sounds damn good. 😉

Advice from a friend of mine who has been very successful with about 3 franchises. If you're going to get a franchise follow their plan. If you bought well, you're buying a proven successful marketing plan. Follow it.

IHOP and put one in Cincinnati. Right around here is an exploding population, no Bob Evans and only one Waffle House. I'd do it if I had the money. No IHOP's in Cincy by the way, and a damn shame if I do say so myself. Lots of Perkins though. No Denny's anymore either.

If I was doing one right now I'd look hard at Curves. Women's health club type thing. I really haven't looked hard at it yet thought.

Pimpin': I used to have a 'cathouse' franchise on the second floor of a bar. Had to close it though. Too much f#@@in' overhead.

Canyon,

My cousin owns two curves in my area and is purchasing a third. Not a lot of money in owning one but owning a string of them is becoming quite lucrative for her.

Appreciate the comment. My wife may be considering one. Better own the gym then pay someone to work out 🙂
