More details to follow ... basics ... my wife meant well I suppose ... however -

1. She turned down the heat in the basement ... temps fell 50 degrees or so ... from what she told me ...

2. Temps lowered - the temperature tricked out the sensors in the Avallo - making it appear that the humidity was lower than it actually was ...

3. Wife increased the 'desired' temperature on the controls ...

4. Actual humidity soared ...

5. Spring starts - or shows it's head ....

6. Basement warms up ...

7. MOLD starts in BOTH humidors -

8. Came home for Easter Weekend ... found Penicillen spores growing ALL OVER just about every other stick ... total sticks 'infected' .... over 1500 .... the mold even started in several sealed boxes ... that's how long she'd had the humidity that high ...

I'll try & give ya'll some pictures so you'll get to see the difference between mold & plume ... and settle that discussion once & for all ... it'll be sickening to say the least and when I get time I'll 'prolly open them up and burn the sticks in a campfire in the back yard ... meanwhile ... I'm going to enjoy the wife's efforts to make this one up to me ....

Man, that made me weak in the knees. And I will now check my coolerdores. Sort of like you hug your kids right after hearing about something horrible happening to someone else's children.

I feel for you man..........Haven't been hit nearly as hard as you but did have to dump seven premiums last Friday due to mold. Second time I've had mold in this same humidor. First time, I completely emptied it out (500 count) and put the sticks in an Igloodor. Wiped down the cedar lining with a very dilute mixture of Clorox and distilled water. Then wiped it down with pure PG. Then let it dry for about three weeks with top open (to make sure no chlorine was still around to permeate the sticks). Thought I had it beat. I'm going to have to do the same thing again, or chalk it up to the fact that this humidor just isn't usable anymore. Don't know........maybe if there's just ONE mold spore left, it'll eventually come back.........but it does make you kinda sick.......

Just my thoughts.............

Nothing I can say can possibly assuage your grief, but I am sorry. Enjoy making her pay in all of the little ways that only you have access to. You should have the upper hand for about 20 minutes or so.

As long as it's on the surface ... just wipe it off!

If it's fuzzy (spidery) or bluish-green then it's mold (it can be white too), and if it's like powder (crystals), it's bloom/plume.

Unless you have a camera that can take extreme high definition photos, posting pictures are going to be hit or miss ...

Good point, Slim. Even still, the compression required to post a shot on this site is overwhelming as well. Best thing would be to get as close as possible using a macro lens or setting.

Do they make a sympathy card for cigars that meet an untimely death?

What a nightmare !!!! At what Humidity should you be concerned about mold forming in the humidor and on your sticks ??? And for how long does it normally take the mold to show up ???

What Slim said...

just wipe it off and go with it. THe PG should prevent and get rid of the mold eventually.

Sounds like one expensive campfire...

My whole collection isn't 100 cigars , can't imagine having to give up 1500!!!
