"The Interior Department on Friday fired National Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers, according to an advocacy group.

"Until the termination takes effect on Saturday morning, Chambers, placed on paid administrative leave last December after she discussed budget and staffing shortfalls with the press, will remain under a gag order, said Chas Offutt, spokesman for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. The group, involved in Chambers' legal proceedings, is still "digesting" her termination papers, he said.


"The Park Service could not be reached for a confirmation, or an explanation of its action.


"In the meantime, Chambers' legal team has asked an administrative judge at the Merit Systems Protection Board to order the Park Service to reinstate her.


"The Park Service placed Chambers under the gag order and on administrative leave early last December after she talked to the Washington Post. Don Murphy, the agency's deputy director, charged her with improper budget communications, making public remarks regarding security on federal property, improper disclosure of budget deliberations, improper lobbying, failure to carry out a supervisor's instructions, and failure to follow the chain of command."

This story was last Friday night. Relatively the same stuff ran Saturday.

It doesn't quite measure up to Richard Clarke's firing, so that's probably why you don't see as much about it. She has herself a "legal team", so obviously she was expecting this.

Whoopi has every right to say what she wants. But that doesn't mean people have to agree with it. Slimfast didn't and are acting on it. Good for them.

This discussion reminds me of when that Dixie Chick made comments about Bush.

Whoopi can stand on any corner and say whatever she wants whenever. Her rights are intact. Nobody has to pay her for the speech, it isn't part of the rights.

Where was Whoopi, et al when the left called for Dr. Laura to be fired, boycotted, etc. when she exercised her rights?

We must stand for everyone's rights, no matter how odious Mike Moore is, or we will eventually lose them.

Whoopi was within her rights. Slim Fast was within its rights.

When I heard the news yesterday, it appeared that Whoopi was gracious about it and wasn't complaining about this. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, did you guys hear about Whoopi complaining?

Whoopi got exactly what she deserved! For making her remarks she gets to "pay" for them!

I think that there was a song on there called "Freedom of Speech", but I am not sure if the lyrics had the "Just Watch What You Say" part.

One of the funniest "yo mama so ugly" one-liners was the one that went "Yo mama so ugly Ted Danson wouldn't date her."

That's my favorite Whoopi reference, for those of you who can remember the time those two were an item.

Actually, I think Whoopi's kinda cute in a way and often pretty funny. But entertainers who don't want only half an audience ought not to be so venemous when they are voicing their domestic politics opinions. The country is pretty evenly split on a lot of issues, and each side is pretty defensive.

i found it ironic that whoopie -- who has always been pretty "be yourself" about body image -- would be a shill for a diet drink anyway.

but it's odder still that the co. would hire whoopie -- known for her very acidic and often R-rated comedy -- and then fire her for the same thing that MADE her famous in the first place!

whatever, though -- whoopi was within her rights; the co. was within its rights (as someone mentioned above). i have a hard time seeing whoopi whining about it, though. most likely it'll become fodder for her next HBO special, and a whole lot more people will get a chuckle out of it.
