Police crack down on underage drinking

The UNCW school year started with a bang and some flashes for local law enforcement members.

Wilmington police issued 70 citations, mostly alcohol citations, to college-aged partiers last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the weekend ending the first week of the school year, Sgt. Jeff Allsbrook said at a meeting of the University/Community Taskforce. Officers with Alcohol Law Enforcement issued another 87.

Party-goers reacted using their cell phone to take pictures of officers, claiming they were being harassed, Sgt. Allsbrook said. He told the task force that undercover officers would continue to make undercover sweeps – as manpower allowed – of college parties where underage drinking was likely.

Thank God the legal drinking age in NC was 18 when I was growing up. The argument then was "old enough to get drafted, old enough to have draft"

lol by the time i was 21, i was bored to death with alcohol. i grew up in IN where it was 21, but 15 minutes across the line in OH, we could drink at 19 -- and we took FULL advantage of that! 🙂

i know a lot of college students get a bad rap, and i truly think most are good joes and janes. but i can NOT imagine saying "'scuse me, officer, but i think you're harrassing me, so let me take your picture to get you in trouble for doing your job!"

kids are going to smarten up quick-like when they find out that those undercover cops' bosses KNOW they're there -- they SENT them there! lol
