MACS(SW) or anyone who cares,

A bar patron of mine was talking about his experiences in Vietnam and went by this handle... "MAC(SV)".

Military Assistance Command (South Vietnam)

Does this sound right?

I've always read it MACV, but that may have been a valid acronym at one point. They always seem to change periodically.

MACV was established in 1962 and remaind that until May 1975. It was never officially known as anything else. I never heard the term MAC (SV) in my tour.

Anyway... on to the question. I don't know. 🙂
I only know that my screen name is a Navy abbreviation for my rank, rating(job) and designator(air/surface/sub).

The MA = Master-at-Arms (this is what the Navy calls MP's)
The CS = chief, senior (this is my enlisted rank, E-8)
The (SW) = Surface Warfare qualified (which means I know a little bit about a lot of things)

Yea, the guy wasn't 100% sure whether it was V or SV. Sounds like it was V. He probably said V until I brought up MACS(SW). I couldn't remember the exact acranym, but I knew it had 2 letters in parentheses so I thought they might have been the same and probably said my cigar friend was SV... to which he said something like... "It could've been SV, I'm not sure."

He may have been just being courteous and tolerant of my obvious lack of knowledge.

Now I know. Glad I asked.
