Will we get a "mission accomplished" banner???

Well, since the mission seems to be keeping us in a recession and not allowing people to work, I'd say yes. They can hang the banner on the empty Gibson factory and Obama can jump out of a jet wearing a flight suit with a big smile on his face.

Solyndra to Declare Bankruptcy
President Obama touted the facility only a year ago.By Scott McGrew | Wednesday, Aug 31, 2011

Solyndra -- recently touted as an innovator by President Obama -- is reportedly shutting its doors. Employees are being turned away this morning.

Solyndra announces it plans to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is suspending operations and seeks a reorganization.

Solyndra, a major manufacturer of solar technology in Fremont, has shut its doors, according to employees at the campus.

"I was told by a security guard to get my [stuff] and leave," one employee said. The company employs a little more than 1,000 employees worldwide, according to its website.

[Analysis: Solyndra Bankruptcy a Disaster for President Obama]

Shortly after it opened a massive $700 million facility, it canceled plans for a public stock offering earlier this year and warned it would be in significant trouble if federal loan guarantees did not go through.

The company has said it will make a statement at 9am California time, though it's not clear what that statement will be. An NBC Bay Area photographer on the scene reports security guards are not letting visitors on campus. He says "people are standing around in disbelief." The employees have been given yellow envelopes with instructions on how to get their last checks.

Solyndra was touted by the Obama administration as a prime example of how green technology could deliver jobs. The President visited the facility in May of last year and said "it is just a testament to American ingenuity and dynamism and the fact that we continue to have the best universities in the world, the best technology in the world, and most importantly the best workers in the world. And you guys all represent that. "
The federal government offered $535 million in low cost loan guarantees from the Department of Energy. NBC Bay Area has contacted the White House asking for a statement.

Some Republicans have been very critical of the loans. "I am concerned that the DOE is providing loans and loan guarantees to firms that aren't capable of competing in the global market, even with government subsidies" Florida Congressman Cliff Stearns told the New York Times.

Biden calls for new clean energy policy for US - By CRISTINA SILVA - Associated Press

...Vice President Joe Biden gives a keynote address at the National Clean Energy Summit, …

..Vice President Joe Biden, accompanied by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nev. …

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The United States can't lead the world in the 21st century with its current energy policy, Vice President Joe Biden told alternative technology supporters Tuesday at a clean energy summit in Las Vegas.

The nation is already trailing China and Germany in green technology, Biden said. It will trade its dependence on foreign oil for a dependence on foreign clean energy technology if its leaders don't act to help fledging green researchers and businesses, he said.
"If we shrink from deciding whether we are going to lead in the area of alternative energy, renewable energy, then we will be making the biggest mistake that this nation has made in its history," Biden said during his keynote speech at the fourth-annual National Clean Energy Summit at the Aria hotel-casino.

Biden said the future will demand cities that produce all the energy they consume; battery-powered cars able to travel great distances and bacteria that converts sunlight directly into fuel, among other innovations.

"Innovation and energy will go on whether or not we join and no nation which expects to be a leader of other nations can fall behind," he said.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and California Gov. Jerry Brown also addressed the Las Vegas conference, where union, business and government leaders discussed energy security and independence.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has hosted the agenda-setting conference since 2008. He said Congress needs to extend tax incentives for renewable energy, noting that green technology is one of the few expanding industries in the down economy. Reid said he has not spoken with President Barack Obama in a week, but has urged Obama's staff to include green energy in the president's widely anticipated jobs speech next week.

Reid also announced that construction on the world's first hybrid geothermal and solar power plant is starting in northern Nevada. Enel Green Power North America's geothermal plant in Churchill County is adding a solar project. The expansion is Nevada's latest clean energy project, many of which have been partially funded by Washington.

"We can't lose sight of the big picture," Reid said. "The big picture is jobs."

A Republican spokesman countered that policies pushed by Democrats have failed to create green energy jobs as promised.

"The truth is, Barack Obama and Joe Biden have no cohesive energy plan to create jobs or control energy prices," said Ryan Mahoney, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee.

But Biden argued during his speech that the green industry needs both public and private contributions to succeed. To make his point, he singled out five technology companies receiving up to $6 million each from the Department of Energy that have since attracted more than $100 million in private investments. The firms in North Carolina, California and Colorado are developing advanced grid scale batteries or new approaches to biofuels or waste heat recovery.

"No previous generation has had that debate about whether or not we are going to lead the world because in the past it simply hasn't been a question," Biden said. "This isn't science fiction. This is within our grasp."

The cost of not investing in the country's technological future was a central theme of the conference.

Chu said oil prices will increase in future years while green energy will become cheaper. He stressed science education as a top priority.

"It's part of American heritage to make national investments during time of distress," he said.

Brown said the stalemate between Republicans and Democrats in Congress is hurting the economy. California and Nevada have the highest unemployment rates in the nation.

"What is needed is stimulus," Brown told The Associated Press. "Stimulus is money. If the consumer doesn't provide it then the federal government has to provide it."

These morons don't know what they're doing. They're cheerleading these "green" businesses and giving them money to prop up whatever the hell the company is doing. They get all this great press and the media eats that crap up with both hands faster than Oliver Twist can eat gruel. Then when the businesses fail and file for bankruptcy...what's the vice-idiot do? Run to a microphone and say we need to give more money to these failed companies! What a dolt! Only a tingling leg buffoon would support these jackwagons for what they do now!

Pfft… We did it first here in MA thanks to our governor Obama Lite (Deval Patrick)

BOSTON (AP) — Evergreen Solar, the solar energy company that received millions in grants and tax incentives from the state before closing one of its Massachusetts facilities, has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy relief.

The Marlborough-based company announced Monday that as part of the reorganization it would reduce its United States and European workforce by about 65 people and suspend operations at its Midland, Mich., facility.

In January the company announced it planned to shutter its solar panel factory in Devens, Mass., and eliminate 800 jobs, citing the severe economic downturn and far cheaper labor costs at its manufacturing facility in China.

State officials say Evergreen Solar has been awarded more than $20 million in grants and an additional $11 million in tax and lease incentives since 2008.

......

"It's part of American heritage to make national investments during time of distress," he said. 😕 😕 😕 I just REALLY don't get this one...

.......

"What is needed is stimulus," Brown told The Associated Press. "Stimulus is money. If the consumer doesn't provide it then the federal government has to provide it."

But... what if the consumer isn't providing it because they just don't want your product? What if they're not providing it because they're busy trying to find a shelter and a soup kitchen because their house was foreclosed on? What if they're not providing it because they're unemployed and broke because of the recession (ultimately) caused by our government continually spending money that it doesn't have? How is spending more money we don't have going to fix that? Since when is it the government's responsibility to pay for someone's business to succeed? Why are some businesses supposedly entitled to government money to guarantee success and others aren't? Why wasn't our Christian bookstore entitled? I really miss that place. As a consumer, I didn't provide "stimulus" because I couldn't afford a $65 Bible, so doesn't that mean it was then the government's job to provide it? What's the criteria here? Who decides who's worthy and who's not? Why are we cramming capitalism down the throats of other nations when our own government clearly hasn't mastered the most basic principles of it? If we're supposed to cure our unemployment ills by creating "green energy jobs," isn't the eventual outcome of that going to be more unemployment due to the loss of coal and oil industry jobs? The ultimate goal is supposed to be to REPLACE those energy sources with "green energy" - isn't it? I'm so confused... this is why I hang out on the misc forum - this place hurts my head.
