I've heard in the last few days a number of media pundits pose the question what to do if the elected Gov. of Iraq asks us to leave.

I think it's the wrong question.

Rather, what do we do if the elected government asks us to stay? To take sides and continue to fight on their behalf in what could develop into an Iraqi civil war? Or bug out after creating the situation?

we ourselves went through a civil war and it was Britian who had to choose...

I think we may find ourselves doing the very same thing here in the near future...

I don't see us Bugging out until Iraq is stable enough to govern on her own...

I also see our Military Presense there for a very long time in the future...

Hog,
I have to agree with you! Look at Japan...we still have troops there from WWII, Germany, the same thing, Korea, since the Korean war...the only place we really left was Vietnam.

a better question . . .

What happens when the new government of Iraq requests more troops from the UN to help stabilize the country, and the UN refuses?

I think this is a very good question because I expect this to happen.

The question was..."If they ask us to leave"...

...we should leave.

If they ask us back to help, we should stay out.

Purely hypothetical of course.

The truth of the matter is, and is a widely known fact, those currently in power in Iraq are abundantly grateful for our help and sacrifice and would take it again in a second if offered.

hey hup, I know this is a little off topic, but one thing that you are forgetting (or perhaps never knew) about Korea, is that the war is still technically on-going. There was never a treaty signed, only a cease fire. The South Koreans, as well as the North Koreans still train their military as though they are still at war because they are and we are there to try to keep the cease fire in place.
