I just saw this pic posted on my cousin's Facebook page of our cousin's home in CO Springs. It was taken shortly before evacuation.

My cousin returned to their home. Fortunately the fire didn't reach their house. He posted a pic of the fire map (aerial view) on FB, and the fire stopped about 150' behind their house on the other side of the road. 😱 Waldo Canyon is only a couple miles from their home.

I get it...i think.

The smoke in this pic is coming from Waldo Canyon...a couple miles from their home as they were evacuating. As mentioned, the fire stopped about 50 yards from their home/neighborhood. From the looks of it, they shouldn't have to fear any large wildfires in the next few decades...there's nothing to burn.

Waldo canyon is one of the canyons behind Garden of the Gods that runs into Hwy 24 (Ute Pass). It is a popular hiking area that was literally covered with dead trees from a beetle infestation a few years ago. There were plans to log out the dead trees before they became a fire hazard, but this idea was blocked by a certain environmental group with political clout.

That reminds me of Yellowstone park(island park) fire when I was a kid on a camping trip.
We woke up to an orange gray sky.
Had to get airlifted out. That fire destroyed everything.
It's a scary thing and I am sorry for th people that have to deal with this.

Do you think Haiti or Japan are going to send us relief money like we did for them?

I grew up about an hour south of Island Park. It was YEARS before I could stand to drive through there or Yellowstone after the fires - too heartbreaking. All that ash and smoke in the air coated EVERYTHING for the longest time... but it sure did make for some breathtaking sunsets for a while. Creepy enough to see the glow of the fire out on the horizon - I can't imagine having to be airlifted out of the middle of it! (don't know if you're watching it, but the Fontanelle fire out by Big Piney is up to 56,000 acres burned and only 5% contained according to last night's news - but at least it's burning in uninhabited/sparsely inhabited areas. Not nearly as destructive as Waldo Canyon, in that respect.)

Ram ran calling Wildfire [x3]
By the dark of the moon Bloody planted
But there came an early snow
There's been a hoot-owl howling by Bloody's window now
For six nights in a row
Ram's coming for Bloody, I know
And on Wildfire they're both gonna go

They'll be riding Wildfire [x3]

On Wildfire they're gonna ride
Gonna leave sodbustin' behind
Get these hard times right on out of they're minds
Riding Wildfire...
