When I first started this hobby, I was taught what I was told was the “proper” way to light a cigar. Toast the foot while rotating the cigar, until the entire foot is cherry red. Take one puff and repeat the toasting and puff until the cigar is going real good, and evenly lit. I was told that this would prevent pulling “off flavors” from propane into the cigar, and assure an even light. To this day, mostly out of habit, I still follow this procedure.

When I’m herf’n with my buds, I notice many of them stick the smoke in their mouths, apply flame and puff away like they where lighting a cigarette.

So, do any others here follow a lighting ritual? Just wondering if I’m in the minority here, and/or wasting my time taking such care in lighting my smokes?

BTW, I’ve heard of some folk who won’t even cut the cap until the cigar is burning well.

I like using a soft flame when lighting my cigar. I tend to char the foot of the cigar if I use a torch.

Same as you Dp. Hold the Cigar a good distance from the flame and slowly rotate it until it's good and lit. I do it so the foot doesn't get too hot too fast and then the wrapper splits on ya. I always wet the cap a bit then punch it before I light it though.

I rub two cedar spills together until they ignight then throw on some kindling. I get a good flame going then hold my cigar over it until the cello burns off and puff away. 🤥

I take my time and toast the foot slowly, without the flame touching if possible, I have lit the end of the SS's without snipping the end , sort of like that smell that comes from that closed foot as it slowly glows. I don't like puffing and lighting, it usually tastes hot and bitter, and starts uneven. Whereas as others stated above, that smoke far more have said, rolling it slowly and evenly.

Actually, for an honest answer............

I like lighting my cigars with a triple torch so that the whole foot gets toasted at the same time. I don't mess around with it. Ignite torch, apply to foot, couple a puffs, BAM......done deal.

I think after the first quarter inch, none of you is gonna taste lighter fluid, cedar, bic butane or any such thing.

..........and I don't put my pinky in the air when I light it either.............

Toast foot with torch then use a match to light it if it's one of my real nice cigrs and Im at my local relaxing. But if I'm in my truck I still toast the foot and ill also lite it with my torch.

To each his own. ESPECIALLY with cigars

My usual ritual is the same as most of you; Clip/punch the head and toast the foot with my torch. Sometimes if the cigar comes wrapped in cedar I will light that and finish off the light. I recall an article in CA a few months back with...F' I don't 'member, but it was someone important (musta been he was in CA [sarcasm] ) He said he never clips the head before lighting and uses 3 matches slowly toasting the foot and the clips the head and puffs. Said it keeps the flavor "pure". I tried it once or twice...I am too damned inpatient and to me (noob palate and all) it didn't seem to make a bit of difference. Just my .02 In the end it is your cigar...light it how you like it and sit back and enjoy...just like I am with the DE Undercrown Gran Toro 🇨🇮 🇨🇮

That's what I commented on in the OP. Some claim that cutting the cap before lighting allows off flavors into the smoke during the lighting process. Personally, I want to dry puff a couple times before lighting to check the draw.

That Undercrown GT is tasty but......twice I've smoked a Genesis before the UC, and found the UC disappointing. Last night I smoked the Undercrown GT first, followed by a Genesis Toro and came to the same conclusion. I enjoy the Genesis far more, but YMMV.

For me, toast till lit, then I puff through to push out the smoke from lighting. Don't think I'd ever toast before clipping/punching though, what if you have a bad draw? You'd not know that until you already had the thing lit. I've had times where I clipped or punched, found a tight draw, and the stoogie went directly into the dry box to sit a day or two, which fixes it most of the time.

Turn on the electric stove until the burner is red, stick that sucker in your mouth, lean over, apply to burner and puff like a dragon until it's burning.

I saw a guy at my B&M light a cigar off of someone else's lit cigar. I was shocked by what I saw! He picked up a burning stick from the ashtray, tapped the ash and lit his cigar off of it!

Shop owner threw him out. Couldn't believe it!
