As a fan of Thompson I dont find that strange for him at all. If ya read some of his books it would actually make sense. The scariest thing was that he was voted sheriff at one time in the past.

Hunter Thompson was liberally conservative. He loved his guns...loved his booze...loved his drugs (or anyone elses who happened to have any). He was a very different kind of guy...one that would shead any label applied to him.

Read "Where the Buffalo Roam" or any of his "Fear and Loathing" books. He may have embellished a bit...or a lot. But he pretty much lived his life the way he wrote his life.

He always put the gun to his head and even pulled the trigger many times. His search for the eternal buzz is now complete.

It really isn't sad...just expected. My thoughts would be that he found out he had an illness he didn't want to endure.

Rest in peace.

Years ago, didn't they shoot Quaker rice cereal from cannons to puff it up or something like that?

Quaker Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice, "Shot from guns!"

If I remember correctly.

I enjoyed his paranoid writing, even though he was a total nut case!

" I'd hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Then it was quiet again. My attorney had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. "What the hell are you yelling about?" he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound Spanish sunglasses. "Never mind," I said. "It's your turn to drive." I hit the brakes and aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor **** will see them soon enough.

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. "

Rest in Peace, good Doctor. You will be missed.

While on the subject...it seems right to eulogize him with some of his best:

Thompson is showing a British writer (Ralph Steadman) around the Kentucky Derby on some stolen press credentials. Steadman has never been to the Derby before so Hunter is giving the rundown:

Later Friday afternoon, we went out on the balcony of the press box and I tried to describe the difference between what we were seeing today and what would be happening tomorrow. This was the first time I had been to the Derby in ten years, but before that, when I'd lived in Louisville, I used to go every year. Now,looking down from the press box, I pointed to the huge grassy meadow enclosed by the track. "That whole thing," I said, "will be jammed with people;fifty thousand or so, and most of them staggering drunk. It's a fantastic scene -- thousands of people fainting, crying, copulating, trampling each other

and fighting with broken whiskey bottles. We'll have to spend some time out there, but it's hard to move around, too many bodies."

"Is it safe out there? Will we ever come back?"

"Sure," I said. "We'll just have to be careful not to step on anybody's stomach and start a fight." I shrugged. "Hell, this clubhouse scene right below us will be almost as bad as the infield. Thousands of raving, stumbling drunks, getting angrier and angrier as they lose more and more money. By midafternoon they'll be guzzling mint juleps with both hands and vomiting on each other between races. The whole place will be jammed with bodies, shoulder to shoulder. It's hard to move around. The aisles will be slick with vomit; people falling down and grabbing at your legs to keep from being stomped. Drunks pissing on themselves in the betting lines. Dropping handfuls of money and fighting to stoop over and pick it up."

He looked so nervous that I laughed. "I'm just kidding," I said. "Don't worry. At the first hint of trouble, I'll start pumping this 'Chemical Billy' [his can of mace] into the crowd."

Cool. One of my relatives was Heratio Nelson. He loved cannons too. But he was shot by a French Sniper while doing his job. No respect. Typical French.

Blew his head off while on the phone with his wife. With his grandchild in the house. Self-absorbed to the end.

You can say it.

Go ahead, say it!

Nobody should think any less of you because you say it.

Don't leave a glaring hole to your sentence.

SAY IT!!!!!

Snipe! There! Now that it's out in the open....I too wondered if HST ever went snipe hunting.

Where's the aspirin?
