Before I ask my question, I wanted to briefly introduce myself. I am new to the cigar world and have found that by myself, I am learning things the hard way. I am confident that I have purchased some of the worst cigars for the money that I have spent. I hope to soak up some of the knowledge that many of you veterans possess...I have zero ego. I'll probably lurk most of the time so as to not ask the same types of questions that have likely been addressed a thousands times over. If anyone needs advice on fly-fishing, I'd gladly exchange what I know for your exptertise and guidance in the cigar world.

Already, I have started learn quite a bit from a few of the threads that have been made for newbs like myself. I started reading a number of them last night and before I knew it, it was nearing 3 am.

Hoepfully this question has not been asked a ton before, but I am wondering if the wood used in the Romeo Y Julieta 1875 Reserve boxes and if the wood used in the God awful 5 Vegas Gold Maduro's bexes are made of spanish cedar.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum - there is a lot of info achived here in these threads huh.

As to your question, I believe that for the most part, cigar boxes are all made from spanish cedar which is actually a type of mahogony. Even the boxes that look like cardboard are usually spanish cedar panels with stickers covering most of the wood.

Again welcome to the forum - beware the thonginator.

well, I separated the Romeo Y Julieta lid from the box and it looks like it's made of a particle board-like material. The 5 Vegas Gold Maduro box looks like it could be spanish cedar, or at least the inner part might be lined with it, but it looks like a messy job to separate the inner box from the pyramid shaped outer shell.

I see that it is some sort of right of passage to for newbs to look up the thonginator. I am readying myself and am about to search for the thread or image. Will report back.

most boxes are lined with Spanish Ceder. A few are made completely of SC. some have no SC at all.

are you planning on using the SC for something specific?

I wanted to line the inner part of my tupperdor with the SC. I am such a newb. I ordered a bunch of cigars without being prepared to store them properly. I purchased several of the humi-crysal jars and had a cheap digital hygrometer, which crapped out within a week of use--this is in my smaller humidor. I also live in one of the driest states in the U.S. (Utah), even in the winter.

Any advice is appreciated.

I admire a guy with no inhibitions. Nice stomache beard too, almost looks like he purposely sculpted it into the perfect oval. Truthfully, it reminded me of an Easter Egg, wihch reminded me of Jesus, which reminded me of church, which reminded me that I haven't been to church in several decades. Maybe I'll go this weekend.

Leave the sticks in their boxes. Put the boxes in a cooler, or big Tupperware. Cooler better though, then as you go, keep the better boxes to sort your stuff. Liberty boxes are about the best, but can be hard to get. Free anyway. Scratch the jars. Get the beads from www.heartfelt.com. Enjoy.

You might want to fix that.

@sd72, I bought the biggest tupperware with tight-sealed lid that I could find at Walmart. Still, it's not big enough to fit all of my horrible cigars and some boxes to boot. I can't believe how fast cigars can accumulate. I could be in real trouble once I start to cultivate a proper understanding for cigars and all of their wonderful differences. I also tend to struggle with moderation and tend to go all out or not at all.

Thanks for the help!

Keep buying coolers, beads, and good hygrometers...they are cheap and no matter how many you accumulate they don't take up too much room. Next time just buy a bigger one. As for the cedar...Eh, let your humi and the boxes take care of that little detail. Get on the NOOB/VET Trade list and BOMB the hell out of one of these vets with those yard gars!!! They deserve it!

Man, you made it that easy on the n00b? I had to use the search feature and even found the most frightening pic of the Thonginator-he's wearing an Ole Miss Rebels shirt for crying out loud. [frypan] [frypan] [frypan] (BTW in the poster thread)

Hail State and War Eagle!

Welcome to the madhouse, and be ready to buy more tupperdors/coolidors, humidors, end tables....and never trust a n00b or Vet to be able to count to 5.

Oh yeah, go throw your local B&M a little business (like some White Owls for your Vet....) and see if you can get some of the cedar inserts from old boxes from them. At worst they'll charge you a nominal amount, but will keep a local business around for emergencies/butane and other hard to get shipped needs if you live somewhere like Kalifornia.

Wow, just smoked a CAO Brazillia, which is the best smoke I have had so far. Again, I don't have much to compare to, but it was well worth standing outside in 20 degree weather to do so. I just got it today and was worried that it'd ruin in my poorly contructed tupperdore. Some of the best things in life occur when you're tolerating the elements while doing what you enjoy...I really love the contrast.
