My brother-in-law found out i have been getting myself into cigars and said he had some for me. Handed me this oliva 6-sampler box still had the seal and wrapped in plastic. I have absolutely no idea how old these are or in what conditions they were stored in. I opened the box and dividers looked pretty warped. and all the hinges are rusted but the outside of the box looks intact. Upon removing one of the cigars from its recent home i notice how yellow the cello is, on all 6. I've heard that is a good sign they are aged, but again, not sure what condition they have been stored. i don't see any "mold" but the inside of the cellos boast several white-sh "spots" that have a snowflake like pattern to them. They smell like a cigar (never had an "aged" cigar so nothing to compare it to) i have attempted to remove a few of them from the cello and they almost look "waxy" (plume?) i am attempting to bring these bad boys back to health in a zip lock back and some 70% Xicar Pillows. i am a little weary of storing them with my regular stash because i don't know if there is anything on them and i don't want them to "infect" my other cigars.

Is there anything i can do to tell the age of the box/cigars? if they were stored for years un-humidified (which is most likely the case since my Bro-in-law doesn't smoke), are they even going to be smoke-able?

i can throw some pics up in when i get home from work but until then...should i even be wasting my time?

If they were un-humidified there's no Fing way it's mold unless he lives in a jungle. Probably plume.

Smoke one. Olivas are good sticks.

They don't date stamp samplers as far as I know, I don't think they date stamp boxes either for that matter.

what do old dry cigars that were recently humidified taste like? Do you think the sealed box preserved them somewhat?

I'm pretty inexperienced, but based on what I've been told and read here by some of the old-timers I would note the following:

1. 70% humidity is probably too high for nursing sticks back to proper humidity. Start lower. You want to re-humidify as slowly as possible. If you go too quick, the filler picks up moisture too quickly, swells, and will burst the wrapper. Think "Gurkha" but worse.

2. I would remove the cello and leave it off. Check the sticks for mold. Plume brushes off easily, mold does not. Mold comes in a ton of colors but often has a blueish hue to it. Mold is always furry but this may not be detectable by the human eye alone. I've never heard plume described as being "waxy". This may be a result of whatever caused the warping and rusting of the hinges in which case the cigars may be trash.

3. Good call on not comingling these sticks with others. I would personally never end that segregation.

Use a magnifying glass. Mold is hairy looking. Plume is crystalline. There musta been some humidity if the metal on the box is rusting. And you should bring them up to humidity over time in small increments.

I'd prolly place them in a large ziplock with a hygromter and see just how dry they are first.... then I'd check out some mold pics... the snowflake comment made me wonder...... 😟

Since you didn't mention anything about the cigars being overly moist when you received them, the warped dividers and rusted hinges makes it sounds like they were severely over humidified at some point in the past. The "snowflake" looking things you describe could be old (dead) mold from that period, or it could be some sort of mineral deposit related to the humidity.

Is the box water stained? Part of me is wondering if the box was actually drenched at some point.

Yellow cello can be a result of age, but it can also occur very rapidly under certain adverse conditions. Heat, high levels of ammonia, these can cause cello to yellow significantly in a short period of time. I once intentionally turned a box full of clear/new used cello sleeves into a box of very old looking yellow cello in about two weeks by placing it near a heat source and adding a small amount of ammonia & rubbing alcohol (essentially an ammonia inhalant and forcing the ammonia into vapor) to a stainless sauce cup inside the box.

You mentioned that they still smell like a cigar, so at least there's some hope. If they aren't too dry, I'd say just try one.

Oh, and good call on keeping them separate.

last time i checked them with the pinch test, they seemed like they were accepting the humidity, they had some give and we not cracking, ill post some pictures up tonight, i have been looking for "plume" and "mold" pics on google, nothing looks like these, on either end of the spectrum....

AS for the warp and rust, exactly what i was thinking of also, they had to have been humidified at some point, or stored somewhere damp and musty :/

the snowflake, may has something to do with plume forming inside a cello??? just a thought...i will try to burn one depending on condition. maybe tonight! i let you all know how it goes, or if you never hear from me on this forum again, please alert my local coroner about this thread.....

Plume doesn't usually form unevenly, even under cello. Could be a mineral deposit related to the over-humidification.

Also, something to keep in mind: not all cigars develop plume, there is no timeline for those that do (I've seen it happen as quickly as 6-9 months, and I also have 30 year old cigars that still haven't developed it), and it doesn't mean diddly squat when it does form.

I wouldn't worry about the coroner, now, the CDC on the other hand...

Like TG, I'd be very concerned about the rusted hinges and warped dividers. Those all point to mold, not plume. If it is mold, and only on the wrappers, you can wipe it off. Inspect the open foot. Any hint of mold in the filler, and you better toss them.

I'm remembering back to my chemistry days that certain calcium compounds found in water dry and crystalize in snowflake-like patterns... TG is probably dead on with thinking this box was probably soaked at some point in time and then dried out, hence the rusted hinges, warped interior, yellow cello, and calcium deposits left behind in happy little snowflake patterns...

These cigars didn't happen to come from Craig, did they? I've seen how he stores his Opuses... Opus's? Opi? What do you call a multiplicity of Opus... a gaggle?
